  4. Why management of technology? • What is so important about this topic that we have a required course on it? • What do we mean by the word “technology”?

  5. Exercise • What is your favorite piece of technology? • Why is it your favorite? • Write on a piece of paper with your name and e-mail address to hand in.

  6. Important themes in innovation • Control: We like stuff that gives us more control over day to day activities • Time: We like things that help us carve a few more minutes or seconds out of the day • Examples of these themes? Focus on Technological Innovation • “introducing a new device, method, or material for application to commercial or practical objectives.” (Schilling, p. 1) • Complete management of technology involves other actions in addition to innovation • Learning how to use it • Maintaining it • Deciding when to replace it
