Overview of ALACD • National, non-profit organization • Vision: • A society where all Canadians live active and healthy lives. • Mission: • To encourage all Canadians to live active and healthy lives through the promotion of and advocacy for inclusive active living opportunities at the grass-roots level.

  3. What is active living? • It is a “way of life” • Valuing physical activity as a part of your every day life • Connects the mind, body and soul • Improves your quality of life • Leads to a decrease in health care spending

  4. Benefits… • Enhanced quality of life • Physical • Intellectual • Spiritual • Social • Emotional • Opens doors to other opportunities

  5. How can we achieve our outcome? • Utilize the strength of the ALACD at a national, provincial and local level • Our strength lies in the people; over 1.5 million across Canada belong to the ALACD network. • Appeal directly to Canadians with a Disability • Appeal to our partners and support organizations • Advocate for and support direct intervention

  7. History of MTI • Developed by ALACD and their partner organizations in 1994 • The program includes 8 comprehensive resource binders and 1 abridged version. • The abridged version was sent to every school in Canada in 1995.

The Inclusion Process • Obtain pertinent information • Nature of disability • Participant’s age, skill level, fitness level • Behaviour/attitude towards active living • Past physical activity experience • Identify supports • Family • Peers/volunteers • Program/education assistants • Define safety concerns

  14. Inclusion process continued… • Assess skill • Set realistic objectives • Contribute to I.E.P • Select activities • Make modifications/adaptations to program • Equipment, Skill complexity, Rules, Space • Implement • Evaluate

  15. How can YOU make a difference? • Develop a plan to ensure that your school provides quality daily physical activity for ALL students. • Ensure that your community recreation facilities have a solid, written policy for inclusion within their programs and back it up with ACTION.

Making a difference… • Ensure that your staff/co-workers have an inclusion attitude. • Invite ALACD’s Inclusive Physical Education Coordinator to facilitate a workshop for your staff/co-workers • Market your services to persons with a disability • Invite persons with a disability to sit on advisory councils • Become involved in the ALACD-Ontario network
