Small is Beautiful: Climate Action Planning at a Small Liberal Arts College Ludovic Lemaitre ‘11 and Dr. Karin Warren Environmental Studies & Science, Randolph College, Lynchburg, VA www.randolphcollege.edu
Randolph CollegeA little green college in the Blue Ridge Mountains • Founded as Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 1891; co-ed since 2007 • Charter Signatory of the ACUPCC • Enrollment 600 students; anticipated growth to 1000 students • Beautiful old buildings • 100-acre campus plus off-campus riding center and biological preserves • Nestled in the midst of agricultural counties
Our Climate Action Plan (CAP) • Greenhouse gas inventories (GHGI) and CAP developed by faculty-student team • Two GHGIs conducted so far (2008, 2010) • CAP to be reviewed this fall by our Environmental Council • CAP will then be reviewed by senior administration and the Board of Trustees
Big can be better…in some ways • More land • More building • More students • More resources • More financing • Climate action planning tools are in some ways geared towards large research universities
Small can be beautiful… • Everybody knows your name • Less moneyincentive for ingenuity • Fewer studentsall highly valuedempowered leaders on campus • Faster evolution: The “try and fail” strategy can work more quickly • Cultural transition facilitated
Finding the beauty of small in larger institutions • Streamline the decision-making process by any legitimate means • Forge personal connections (students & faculty) with stakeholders and decision-makers. • Encourage student involvement and volunteerism for the overall benefit of the campusgarners administrative trust and goodwill
