  4. Lesson 1 Introduction to Study

  5. Purpose of Study • Example: Josephus (Jewish Historian) sheds light on New Testament events • The Antiquities of the Jews • The Wars of the Jews • Note the quote on the following slide from Antiquities (Chapter 3) concerning Jesus…

  6. Josephus on Jesus (Ant. 3:3) “Now, there was about this time, Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man, for he was a doer of wonderful works – a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews, and many of the Gentiles. He was [the] Christ; and when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men amongst us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him, for he appeared to them alive again the third day, as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thou-sand other wonderful things concerning him; and the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day.”

  7. Examples of Special Studies • Church/Kingdom (Acts 1,2) (Dealing with Premillenialism • Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4, 38) • Baptism (Acts 2, 8, 10, 16, 22) • Mode of Baptism • Purpose of Baptism • God’s dealing with Nations (Acts 17) • Jew/Gentile Relations (Acts 15)

  8. soundteaching.org • Software called Moodle that allows you to establish online studies • Used by Universities, etc., for online study • Upload all material to the site, organized by lesson • Outlines & Supplemental Material • Audio of each class period • PowerPoint files of each Lesson

  9. Chronology and History • Time frame for Jesus’ life (Gospels). • Time frame and history of the early church and the work of the Apostles. • Incorporate the time of writing of the various New Testament epistles into the study, so that an overview of the entire New Testament chronology is given

  10. Matthew 16:18 “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”

  11. Acts 20:28 “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.”

  12. Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.

  13. 1 Timothy 3:14-15 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

  14. The Claims of Inspiration • The Scriptures claim for themselves inspiration (2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 3:15-16) • This places a burden on scripture to be: • Historically accurate • Geographically accurate • Archaeology and secular history establish the dependability of the New Testament scriptures, and give evidence as to its inspiration.

  15. The Faith of Stephen (Acts 7) Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; 58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." 60 Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, "Lord, do not charge them with this sin." And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

  16. Other Early Christians (Acts 8) Now Saul was consenting to his death. At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. 3 As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison. 4Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word.

  17. Authority Through Example • Mode and Purpose of Baptism (2:38; 8:38-39; 22:16) • Confession unto Salvation (8:37) • Scope and Pattern of Benevolence (11:27-30) • Appointment of Elders (14:23) • Authority of Old Covenant (15) • Frequency and Day of L.S. (20:7) • Work of Elders (20:17-35)
