Now that FDR has been elected President he promised to “fix” the United States Economy…which may not be “fixable”…..
The NEW DEAL I will call them my BRAIN TRUST I may not know how to do this, but I will get some people who do. FDR’s program/programs to fix the economy
The First 100 Days Relief, Recovery, Reform.
It is like he is Speaking directly to me Fireside Chats I feel better already… Roosevelt utilizes radio technology to deliver frank, honest and inspirational speeches to the common American citizen.
Bank Holiday FDR shuts down all the banks. Has a commission go in and see which ones are “good” and which ones are “bad”. The “good” ones will re-open and the bad ones will remain closed…forever. People begin to put their money back into the system.
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Insures people’s savings deposits…up to $250,000 So no more runs on the bank…and no more of this.
Put people to work!!! Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), 1933: employed young adults to perform unskilled work for the federal government Civil Works Administration (CWA), 1933: provided temporary jobs to millions of unemployed Works Progress Administration (WPA), 1935: a reiteration of the PWA, created useful work for skilled workers
TVA Put people to work making dams and bringing hydro-electric power to a 9 state region Tennessee Valley Authority
Before all of this Great Depression mess, businesses “paid” for your retirement. But because of the G.P. a lot of business went bankrupt, leaving many who retired without any means of income or support.
Social Security So ya might want to plan Ahead… 1934 The government through taxes set aside money for people when they hit a certain age. It provided people with “some sort” of income. But it has been suggested that it is not a retirement plan but “social insurance” SO the Federal Government sort of took that role on with The Social Security Act. The “original age” was 65 Then they changed it to 66…. Now it’s 67….
Do you remember me? And they decided to get “rid” of me for “good”…stupid 18th Amendment. I was the solution for all your Needs. But “some” people thought that “I” was the problem.
But now with the G.D. people are sick of the Violence…and they want a way to escape the sad aspects of the depression. So FDR and a host of others decided to repeal prohibition!!! Nothing like a depressant to chase the blues away
Game back on!!!! Thank you FDR…thank you for the 21st Amendment!!! This guy next to me is creapy
I have a question about this New Deal thing… One or two snags on the New Deal
New Deal Supreme Court Case FDR and Congress passed the NIRA (National Industrial Recovery Act). It gave the President the power to regulate interstate-commerce during the Depression. Real quick, Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United States
New Deal Supreme Court Case I thought that was Congress’ job? You remember Gibbons v. Ogden? Well, no one has asked the question yet Until Schecter gets indicted for Violating the NIRA Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United States
New Deal Supreme Court Case The Supreme Court Ruled the NIRA unconstitutional because only congress can regulate trade between the states, and not the President. The court will also strike down AAA (Agricutural Adjustment Act) as well So what does FDR do about it? So what happened? Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United States He tries to change the rules, “sort of”.
Court packing... FDR tries to change the Supreme Court. People “freaked” about FDR’s plan to “not play by the rules” and trying to upset the idea of checks and balances…and the idea/bill dies in congress. Um…man? FDR wants his NIRA and AAA FDR would appoint judges who “agree” with his policies The court struck them down… FDR proposes a bill expanding the court from 9 to 15. 1937 U.S. Supreme Court
FDR continued to “try” new things to get the country out of the depression. He expanded not only the role of the President but the Federal Government’s in the lives of its citizens in everyday life. Hi, how are ya. While things were economically tough here in the U.S. they were down right awful in Europe and Asia Hey!! Don’t forget about me over here!!
