Communication Many methods, processes, strategies, channels & technologies Mass Media Print: text-based Radio: audio-based TV/Video: audio-visual New media Convergent media
Media-based communication… • Necessary but not sufficient? • This alone may not lead to policy or social change • But it’s a useful way to: • Trigger discussion/debate • Create ripples • Get chain reactions started • Not an end by itself…but a process!
Yet…can we ignore it? • Media enriched world • Newsstands & airwaves crowded • Cheap, quick way to access large numbers of people • Opportunities to get across to all walks of society • Partial solution to advocacy & public communication of research
Situation analysis • Research to communicate • Defined audiences to reach • Believe it’s socially important to communicate • Don’t have enough money to buy media space/time • Help!
Mediasaurus? • Mainstream media structures & business models outmoded? • Undermined by new media? • Days numbered? • Doom imminent?
When worlds collide… • Mainstream media (MSM) in decline but still influential… • New media growing, spreading, consolidating… • MSM/New media interplay? • New rules of the media game? • With whom do we hitch a ride?
Who’s afraid of Moving Images? .…..TVE Asia Pacific......
Deep impact? • ‘One picture is worth a thousand words…’ • 1 second of video: 24 frames • = 24,000 words? • 60 seconds of video: 1,440 frames • = 1,440 x 24,000 words?
TVEAP experience shows... Moving images can move people But only when: • used in the right context • broadcast + narrowcast + webcast combination • part of a bigger effort/process • a/v strengths are maximised • a/v limitations are recognised
TVE Asia Pacific • Television for Education – Asia Pacific, trading as TVE Asia Pacific (est. 1996) • Non-profit media foundation, anchored in Sri Lanka, working regionally & journalistically • Using TV, video & web to communicate development • Catalysing public discussion & debate on development + social issues
We are story tellers… • Covering Asia’s ‘emergence’ from many angles, voices and cultures • Going beyond news and current affairs • Factually based • Non-technically told .…..www.tveap.org......
And story amplifiers… • Distribute TV/video development stories to broadcast, civil society & educational users across Asia Pacific • Own content (35%); others’ content (65%) • Moving into new media platforms… .….. www.tveap.org/search/films.htm......
Our little challenge… Capture & disseminate through TV, video + web many & varied facets of how Asians are working for a better today & better tomorrow. Big and unfolding story!
