  1. Propolis…Nature’s Antibiotic Danett’s Journey August 26, 2006

  2. Danett is a Tea Cup Pomeranian. She is currently 4 years old. She was in very good health up to this incident. To the best of our knowledge she was bitten and stomped on by an adult male Black Labrador retriever. It wasn’t discovered for 24-48hrs. After that time I found what appeared to be small pricks in her skin down the full length of her back. I shaved her back and discovered she was losing hair by chunks and there appeared to be deep pockets of edema under various areas of her back. I took her to a couple different veterinarians and had her x-rayed for possible internal injury. There was none. One veterinarian drained two of the larger areas, one on her right upper shoulder area and one on her left rear hip, close to the middle of her spine. After being drained and because they were so deep, they required a couple stitches. She was then sent home; I was told was to watch her and feed her lightly for a couple days. After watching her lay there for two days, hardly moving, I was sure she wasn’t going to live. I felt at that time I needed to do something to help her. I remembered a friend telling me about the wonderful healing properties of honey and propolis. I contacted him, since he has done extensive research on this. He sent me a couple jars of Honey/Propolis and told me to rinse the area and generously apply the Honey/Propolis mixture and wrap with gauze and then ace bandage and repeat every 3-4 days. Also I encouraged the dog to eat a teaspoon full of the Honey/Propolis mixture each time I bandaged her. What follows next are the documented photos I took.

  3. August 26, 2006 I washed the whole back area with Betadine and blot towel dried it. Then I liberally applied the Propolis/Honey and wrapped her with gauze and an ace bandage. She was pretty nervous, kept fidgeting and carrying on, I wasn't sure if it was the propolis/honey or the wrap. I couldn’t wait the full suggested 4 days; I was concerned if it wasn’t going to help, it could be drastically worse if I waited a full week. So I checked her after 2 days. I let the tepid water run gently over the bandaged area to loosen the wraps since the Honey/Propolis is sticky and I did not want to pull at the area least I disturb possible scabs. I think it actually looked a little better. At least the tightness in some of the areas wasn't so firm and there was some oozing from the open wounds, which I took as a good sign, since if it is oozing it isn't sitting there causing infection to set in. I let her air dry a little while, about 20 minutes. Then I slathered the Propolis/Honey on her and wrapped her again.

  4. August 30, 2006 As you can see from the photos, almost the entire area of the back is dead skin. The depth is hard to determine. I did notice there seemed to be healthy pink skin showing at the edges of the back. This I took as a positive sign that the skin was trying to grow and heal. I was still concerned about the deep “holes”, one at her shoulder and one at her left hip. I generously applied the Honey/Propolis and wrapped her again.

  5. September 3, 2006 The entire back seems to be one giant scab. There is still a large hole on the shoulder and hip that is still draining. The scabs over these holes appear to be extremely deep. I can lift up the edges of the scab in various places and I apply the Honey/Propolis under. There does not appear to be any infections. There is no foul odors or pus drain.

  6. September 6, 2006 The scab is starting to break apart now. There are areas where I can see healthy pink flesh growing. I have cut away some of the scab in order to apply the Honey/Propolis directly on the new skin.

  7. September 12, 2006 Here you can see where I have cut away more of the scab. It is still very deep rooted over the hole on the shoulder and the lower hip area. But you can see more healthy skin forming. I also noticed the hair was starting to grow on the back around the edges.

  8. September 16, 2006 The back is healing nicely. The scabs are lifting; allowing me to cut them away. I am concerned about how deep the scab is on the hip. There appears to be a yellowish tissue under the scab. I filled this area with Honey/Propolis and went ahead and generously applied it all over and wrapped as before.

  9. September 20, 2006 The skin tissue is really trying to regenerate. I am continuing the rinsing, Honey/Propolis and wrap.

  10. September 24, 2006 She is really showing great improvement. Her playfulness is back as you see her rolling on the carpet after being rinsed and wrapped. I am very pleased with the use of the Honey/Propolis mixture.

  11. October 1, 2006 Almost all of the scabs have peeled away. I am still generously applying the Honey/Propolis mixture. I want the skin tissue to stay pliable and healthy. I am afraid if it gets too dry it might not split as there still appears to be some swelling. The hair is growing back fast.

  12. October 4, 2006 There is just one deep scab left over the shoulder. She is looking so much better. I think she is feeling much better also as it is getting hard to get her to stand still to wrap her. She wants to play. I think she is getting used to the attention and kind of likes it.

  13. October 9, 2006 All of the scabs have finally fallen off. This is the day I have been waiting for. Although I approach it with great caution, because it appears that an infection could set in easily if I am not very careful. She is not quite out of the woods. I would like to see less of the moist bright redness and more of the pale pink tissue. Then I will be feeling a bit more confident.

  14. October 13, 2006 I think she is getting real tired of the constant bathing. She never really liked getting her feet wet. You can see from the photos on the right that the skin is healing very nicely. Most of the moist bright redness is turning to a healthy light pink. I am still applying the Honey/Propolis for a few more days.

  15. October 16, 2006 We are almost there. There is a very small area on the shoulder that is still a moist bright red. I will just apply the Honey/Propolis to that area this time and wrap just the upper shoulder area. I think the lower back and hip is ready for some air.

  16. October 21, 2006 The scabs on the shoulder seem to have almost healed. The skin where the hair hasn’t grown back is very smooth and soft. I am not wrapping her anymore now. I do apply a small amount of the Honey/Propolis mixture to the upper shoulders, but I just sort of rub it in and let her go.

  17. A special “Thank you….” goes to Glenn Perry (Glen Haven Propolis) for his great advise and Honey/Propolis mixture, without which I think my little furry friend would not be here today.
