Back at Wickham Police Station… • The Rabbi came to the meeting room to look at the items in the box. • In our drama work Farah and Charlie looked after him as everyone became the walls of the room looking on and listening. • We discovered that there was a prayer shawl belonging to the Rabbi’s grandfather in there. He was so pleased that he had that back. • He was keen though for us to find out who had taken these precious things.
Away from the story Mr Brown visited us to help us to learn all about the Jewish festival of Passover.
We know how each part of the meal links back to Jewish beliefs. We were very interested in the plagues and so found out more about them.
Meanwhile back in the story we thought that it would be a good idea to put up posters around Wickham asking if anyone had seen anything suspicious.
Crimewatch • No one came forward so we made an appeal for witnesses on the news and on this BBC show. • Many people had information for us. • We used silent phone calls to show the conversations that people were having. • We also listened in to parts of these conversations and shared the information from them. • There were reports of suspicious acting people wearing a hat and glasses.
So we needed to sort the many suspects and used different charts to do this.
As Superintendent Jones was working on another crime we wrote letters to him to update him on our work.
Miss Hiddles told us the details of her day so we had to update our training on telling the time in order to complete the witness record. There was a problem with the police dog department so we also had to make sure we had good timetables for looking after them; making sure they were being fed and exercised at the right times for instance.
Following this training we were able to plot timelines showing where the 5 main suspects had been on the day the box was discovered.
In response to our letters Superintendent Jones suggested we needed to interview the suspects IMMEDIATELY! So we wrote down our questions, asked them and then added the answers quickly.
But just then Rabbi Goldstein contacted us to say he had received a letter… What did this mean?
Someone working at the synagogue had taken all of the objects. • Who might it have been? We used drama to show who was working there.
It could have been anyone – we had to be careful not to accuse someone without evidence. • Maybe we would have to interview everyone? • And then… • We found some CCTV pictures [created by us!]. They showed us that it was actually Becky the tour guide who had taken the objects. • When Detectives Cull and Brannan went to her house she explained that she only borrowed the things and was returning them to the synagogue when she saw someone she knew and panicked!
She hid the box in the park but when she went to fetch it a little while later it was gone. • She didn’t say anything because she didn’t want to lose her job. • In pairs we showed the conversations between Rabbi Goldstein and Superintendent Jones. The Rabbi was convinced to give Becky a chance. • We showed the moment that she apologised and Rabbi Goldstein accepted – talking to her about asking before taking something. • Becky felt really guilty still so we suggested she send the Rabbi a card.

The crime was solved and to finish this part of the Mantle we wrote the story of Becky’s day…
