Section 2-3 Connecting Motion with Forces. What is a force?. Force- a push or pull one body exerts on another. Force changes the motion or shape of an object. Unbalanced force – when the forces on an object are unequal. Ex. Man pushing car. Result = motion.

What is a force? • Force- a push or pull one body exerts on another
Unbalanced force – when the forces on an object are unequal Ex. Man pushing car Result = motion
Balanced Force – forces on an object that are equal in size and opposite in direction
Balanced forces Chair pushing up Gravity pulling down Example: sitting down Result – forces are equal, no motion
Friction – the force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are touching each other.
What factors affect friction • Type of Surface • How hard the surfaces are pushed together
Friction increases when: • Surfaces are pushed harder against each other
Friction acts: • In a direction opposite to the direction of the objects motion • Without friction: a moving object will not stop until it strikes another object.
Pair share: • Would you encounter a weaker frictional force walking on a dirt trail or crossing a wet log bridge? • Crossing a wet bridge more slippery • Would you have a greater frictional force to overcome pushing a box of full water bottles across a floor or pushing a box of empty water bottles across the same floor? Explain • Pushing full bottles full bottles harder to push against the surface of the floor
It is hardest to push over the surface with the most friction
Types of friction • Show pg 38-39 pearson text book • Sliding • Static • Rolling • Fluid
