  1. Outline • Location of HiRadMat facilities • Table assemblies • Status of experimental area • Status July 2011 • Remaining work for Q3 2011 • Shut-down work 2011-2012 • Operation with test table • Handling • Life cycle High Radiationto Materials:Status of the Experimental Area Ans Pardons HiRadMat Hearing, 27th of July 2011 EDMS 1155004

  2. Location of HiRadMat Facilities Control room Assembly & Preparation area Surface lab Handling test tables Test object is mounted on table in lab with BA7 overhead crane BA7-TJ7: custom-made trailer TJ7-TNC: remote handling with overhead crane User access: When all safety conditions are met: access until assembly & preparation area in TJ7 Access to TNC only with special permission and planned in advance Ans Pardons HiRadMat Hearing, 27th of July 2011

  3. Table assemblies Assembly of test object and movable table – installed on base table 3 1 2 4 1 Movable table 2 Connectors Test object (e.g. LHC collimator) mounted on movable table in lab 4 3 Base table • Test object mounted on movable table = test table • 3 base tables in tunnel, with a dummy table in the surface lab for aligning & test before beam • Remote plug-in connectors • Water cooling, signal (2011) & power (2012) • Remote handling of test table with crane, using mechanical guides Ans Pardons HiRadMat Hearing, 27th of July 2011

  4. Status of the experimental area Status July 2011 & remaining work 2011 • 3 base tables installed and aligned to the beam • All signal cables pulled from TNC to TJ7 and from TJ7 to control room (installation rack in TJ7 and connection cables to tables planned for next TS) • Table cooling circuit installed (connection to tables and pressure test planned for next TS) Also to be done in the next TS: quick connector on gas line opposite tables + completion gas line from TJ7 to surface Status after the last technical stop (TS 4-8/7/2011): Ans Pardons HiRadMat Hearing, 27th of July 2011

  5. Status of the experimental area Status July 2011 & remaining work 2011 • 3 supports for test tables installed in cool-down zone • Extensive handling tests done with movable table (remote tests planned for next TS, when final camera system installed) Status after the last technical stop (TS 4-8/7/2011): Ans Pardons HiRadMat Hearing, 27th of July 2011

  6. Shut-down work Activities for 2011-2012 shut-down: • Cabling of tables 1 and 3 from table to control room • Installation of power line (4kV) from table 2 to surface • Additional remote handling tests if needed • Exchange of entrance window of TED-style beam dump (remote handling of upstream collimator, shielding &TED) • Remote handling of 2011 test tables from cool-down area to surface (after RP green light) • ??? Disposal of former-T9 copper blocks currently stored in sarcophagus in downstream T9 (only if RP green light, possibly delayed until 2013-2014 shut-down) Ans Pardons HiRadMat Hearing, 27th of July 2011

  7. Handling of test table Operation TNC To material lift and BA7 TJ7 Set of 5 Pan-Zoom-Tilt optic fibre network cameras on crane frame(also on lifting beam) Cameras installed right before intervention Viewing station with screens in TJ7 – test during next TS Ans Pardons HiRadMat Hearing, 27th of July 2011

  8. Life cycle of test table Operation Reminder: Test objects must be contained, cable feed-throughs and portholes must be tight Installation of table is 100% remote Each access to TNC must be duly justified. They must be requested before the test table installation. After the cool-down period, the object will be transported to the surface and brought to an adapted (CERN-RP) lab for dismantling. HiRadMat project recovers the mobile table, the user is responsible for treatment of the test object (disassembly, analysis, disposal). After the beam test, the test table will be moved remotely to the downstream cool-down zone for a cool-down period defined by the radioprotection team. Ans Pardons HiRadMat Hearing, 27th of July 2011

  9. High Radiationto Materials: EXPERIMENTAL Area DESIGN Thank you for your attention – Any questions? Ans Pardons HiRadMat Hearing, 27th of July 2011

  11. Test tables Mobile table: geometry and services 1 2 1 2 3 1 1 Movable table Test object (e.g. LHC collimator) mounted on table as in lab 3 2 Connectors • Test table geometry • Mostly aluminium • Weight 450kg • Base plate 50mm thick • Available for test object: • Volume: 2 m x 0.7 m x (H) 1.5m (or cylinder of R=0.35m around beam) • Weight: 2000kg • Plug-in connectors • Remote handling with overhead crane • Test object mounted in surface lab

  12. Test tables Mechanical guides 1 1 2 2 3 3 • Base table: mechanical guides for remote installation • 3 V- shaped supports per mobile table (Extra V-shaped supports allow for different table sizes) • Lab-tested (<0.1mm), tunnel exercises planned

  13. Cooling test tables (more details in presentation of Paul Pepinster/Magali Mendez) TNC TJ7 Detection pressure drop  safety valves close , 9 bar TA7 B. Lacarelle, Y. Lupkins Ans Pardons

  14. Handling of test tables Lab to test zone Custom-made trailer • From lab to test zone (non-radioactive object) • Surface lab: overhead crane to trailer • Trailer: from BA7  material lift  TJ7 • TJ7: transfer to overhead crane • Remote with crane: TJ7  test zone in TNC

  15. Handling of test tables Cool-down zone Downstream end of TNC • Test table supports • 100% Aluminium • Mechanical guides for remote installation (also remote dismantling) • Handling exercises in tunnel planned • Cool-down zone for test tables with test objects • Downstream in TNC, within reach of crane • 3 places (supports) foreseen for 2011, 5 more for 2012

  16. Handling of test tables Test zone to cool-down zone • From test zone to cool-down zone (radioactive object) • Remote with crane: TJ7  cool-down zone in TNC • Remote with crane: place on cool-down zone supports

  17. Handling of test tables Cool-down zone to surface • From cool-down zone to surface (radioactive object) • Remote, with crane: cool-down zone in TNC  TJ7 • Remote, with crane: place on trailer • Manually, protected by distance (and shielding if needed):TJ7  material lift  surface • Manually and in truck with container (and shielding if needed):surface  CERN radioactive lab for disassembly • When needed, followed by waste disposal (CERN) • If dose rate negligible  empty mobile table can be re-used
