  1. Nature of Radiation

  2. Basic Radiation Notes • Release of Radiation is related to the instability of the nucleus. • Nuclear decay tends to move the nucleus towards a condition where the number of neutrons and protons are nearly the same

  3. Symbol for Alpha Particles Alpha Particles • Consist of 2 protons and 2 neutrons. • A loss of a single alpha particle will change the atomic number by to and the mass by 4 (2 protons + 2 neutrons) • And … Large, heavy particles that will travel only about ½ of an inch through air. It can be stopped by paper

  4. Symbol for Alpha Particles ᵝ Beta Particles • Is one electron from the nucleus • A neutron becomes unstable, and splits into a proton and an electron • Then the electron is emitted from the nucleus!!! • Increases the atomic number by 1. • Higher energy than alpha, can travel through several inches of air, stopped by aluminum foil.

  5. Gamma Radiation ᵞ • Pure energy • Nucleus settles to a lower energy level • Lose causes no change in mass or atomic number • VERY HIGH energy. Can travel through thick lead and concrete.

  6. Uses for Radioactivity • Carbon Dating: can use radioactive carbon-14 isotope found in organisms to determine how old fossils are. • Medical Purposes: Treat cancer, diagnose diseases, study environmental conditions.

  7. Note Quiz • What type of and how many particles are released in Alpha Particle Radiation? • What is the symbol for Beta Particles? • What can gamma radiation pass through? You are allowed to use your notes. Make sure all answers are on a half sheet of paper and your name is in the upper right hand corner of the sheet.
