  2. OBJECTIVE • Students will experience the art of literature and language in a rigorous course to prepare them for higher education. Not only will students read, write, and think at a college-bound level, they will also prepare themselves for the STAR, CAHSEE, CST’s, SAT’s, ACT’s, and/or AP exams.

  3. What do we do in here? • Novels/Plays: Classics that will come up on the AP exam. To Kill a Mockingbird • Writing: Constantly working on the writing process. Character Analysis (RtL) • Take various analytical approaches to literature: Historical Approach • Vocabulary: Prepares students for SAT’s, AP Exams, etc.

  5. Literary Concepts Standard-Based Concepts and Applications Visuals of Student Work. • Effects of literary elements. • Ex: plot, theme, setting • Effects of literary devices. • Ex: irony, figurative language, diction • Synthesis/Use of various genres. • Ex: poetry, non-fiction, short story

  6. Types of Approaches/Analyses Example • Textual Analysis • Mythological Analysis • Psychological Analysis • Sociological Analysis • Destructive Analysis • Historical Approach • Biographical Approach

  8. How Can I Check on my Student? • What are agendas? • What is the website calendar?

  9. Discipline Action: • 1) warning with action plan • 2) teacher-student conference • 3)guardian contact/OCAR • 4)OCAR and referral. • Note: The teacher has the right to skip or blend together the above steps depending on the severity of the behavior.

  10. Late Work: Please note that excessive late work may result in a poor grade. • Late work is accepted up until one week before a quarter ends. • Make up work is available in the make up folders for only 2 weeks, and then they are recycled. Many are downloaded on the website. • Work is determined as late when it is not submitted at time of collection. • Completed late work will be given no more than a 50%. Incomplete late work…not acceptable.
