Parts of the Armour of God – Eph 6:10-18 Know your Enemy Eze 28:2 Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God: Eze 28:3 Behold, thou artwiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee: Armour of God
Eph 6: 10-18 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loinsgirt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feetshod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shieldoffaith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; Armour of God
Parts of the Armour • Two types of armour are mentioned in the NT • HOPLON • A lightarmour, this was used for protection of the active warrior • The need was to balance the weightof the armour Vsagility • Ref Rom 13:12 and 2Cor 6:7, Jn 18:3 – is translated as weapons • Rom 6: 13 - Neither yield ye your members asinstruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. The thought of a believer negligently turning his equipment against the things he should be defending “Friendly Fire”. • PANOPLIA – Eph 6:11 • Comes from two words PAN – meaning whole or every and HOPLON which means armour – therefore no part is to be left • This armour enabled a warrior to fight a foe superior in armament and number • Confidence before the assault – Eph 6:11, duringEph 6: 13 and afterEph 6:13 Armour of God
Girdle of Truth - Belt • Meaning • This term is akin to the modern term roll up your sleeves – the girdle was needed to walkfast • 1 Pet 1:13 – Peter talks about the mind and exhorts the readers to gird up the lions of their mind - have the rightthinking • This provided strength to the back and the lower body in an arduous march ahead • Learning • The belt would help a believer in both his walk and his work Ps 15: 1 • Ps 15:2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. • The devil is a liar Jn 8:44 - Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. Girdle of Truth - Belt • Considering • Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. • Re 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; • Applying • Eph 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: • We should not dogmatize, or denounce, or deal out anathemas. Such things only repel. He has done about half his work in convincing another of error, who has first convinced him that he LOVES him; and if he does not do that, he may argue to the hour of his death, and make no progress in convincing him. - Barnes Armour of God
Breastplate of righteousness • Meaning • The breastplate protects the vital organs of the body. • This has both a positional truth of “we being Righteous” and a practical truth of showing a life with “Righteous living”. • Heart is a vital organ of the body and needs protection. • Lion hearted - 2Sa 17:10 And he also that is valiant, whose heartis as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men. There is a thought of courage and morale, the old saying well equipped soldiers running away in the battle not because they couldn’t but because they wouldn’t. • Ps 78:9 ¶ The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. Joshua was from this tribe Nu 13:8 • Learning • Pr 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. - Better, as in the margin, i. e., with more vigilance than men use over anything else. The words that follow carry on the same similitude. The fountains and wells of the East were watched over with special care. The heart is such a fountain, out of it flow the "issues" of life. • Mat 15:18-19 - Mt 15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: Armour of God
Breastplate of righteousness Considering Ro 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Ro 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which isby faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: Ro 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Ro 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: - The gates of justifying grace which lead to the halls of mercy and the banqueting house swing freely and easily on two pillars which rest on the impregnable foundation of redemption and propitiation. Ro 8:1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Ro 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Applying 2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. When a man is clothed in practical righteousness he is impregnable. Words are no defence against accusation, but a good life is. The king of Israel was smitten by an arrow sent from a bow, drawn at a venture, "between the joints of his harness," or the "breastplate," (margin,) \1Ki 22:34; and many a man who thinks he has on the Christian armour is smitten in the same manner.
