SpringBoard 1.9Another Perspective on the World Periodic Sentence • A sentence that makes sense only when the end of the sentence is reached. • Example: After Penny agreed to drive Sheldon to the comic book store in her rickety old car with the flashing “check engine” light, Sheldon complained for the entire ride. • For another example, see p. 27.

  2. SpringBoard 1.9Another Perspective on the World Complex Sentence • A sentence that contains one independent clause and one subordinate clause. Independent Clause • A group of words that contains a subject and a verb, and expresses a complete thought. An independent clause is a sentence. • Example: Leonard worked in the laboratory at the university.

  3. SpringBoard 1.9Another Perspective on the World Subordinate / Dependent Clause • A group of words that contains a subject and a verb, but does not express a complete thought. A dependent clause cannot be a sentence. • Example: While Leonard worked in the laboratory at the university. • What happened while he worked in the lab? The thought is incomplete.

SpringBoard 1.9Another Perspective on the World A complex sentence has both an independent clause and a subordinate clause. • Example: While Leonard worked in the laboratory at the university, Sheldon installed a high-tech security system in their apartment. • Independent: Sheldon installed a high-tech security system in their apartment. • Subordinate: While Leonard worked in the laboratory at the university.

SpringBoard 1.9Another Perspective on the World Parallel Structure • Uses the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance. • Examples: • Sheldon said, “I am a man of principle, a man of logic and science, and a man of his word.” • To install the high-tech security system, Sheldon painted glow-in-the-dark paint on the floor, mounted flashing alarm lights on the walls, and set up an electrified net on the ceiling.
