  2. Goals for today: • To recognize, assess, and address conflict situations that could be precursors to violence • To understand and know how to access the Behavior Risk Management Team

  3. Continuum of Aggression •violence •exertion of force •rough language •provoking of anger •intimidation

  4. Desk Rage is: Anger and stress at work that takes the form of: • yelling • verbal abuse • attacks on office equipment • rudeness • fights with co-workers

  5. Be Proactive • The sooner acts of intimidation or threats of violence are addressed, the easier they will be resolved. Conversely, the longer you wait, the more difficult such problems will be to resolve.

  6. What You Should Do: • Project calmness • Acknowledge feelings • Establish expectation of civility and consequences of continued outbursts • Document • Refer to EAP • Use BRM if appropriate

Behavior Risk Management Protocol Steps • Threat or Incident Occurs: • In an emergency call Public Safety: 911 or 335-5022 • To discuss a referral call Faculty and Staff Services: 335-2085 • On or Off the Job Decision: Made by Supervisor, Department HR and BRM Team. • FSS conducts assessment of the workplace and the individual

Behavior Risk Management Protocol Steps (Continued) • BRM Team meets to share information and determine next steps • Follow up coordinated by FSS: • Recommendations are made to the supervisor in the department regarding safety and accommodations • Return to work agreements if needed • Group work if needed

Steps for the organization to take to Reduce Risk of Violence • Advocate for a healthy work environment, both socially and physically. • Nurture workplace wellness concepts and provide training in interpersonal skills and issues regarding violence. • Zero tolerance must be the foundation for program and policies designed to reduce workplace violence. • Explore ways to engage employee.

  14. 11 Ways to Reduce Desk Rage • Have fun at work • Ensure adequate staffing • Allow enough room to work • Audit desk space for comfort • Reduce noise levels • Provide Reward and Recognition programs

  16. Be Proactive • “If you are frightened and/or anxious about going to work each day because of the repeated inappropriate behavior of another employee, report it to your supervisor, HR rep or The BRM Team. Access the team by calling Faculty and Staff Services, 5-2085.
