  3. No. of Questions & Marks Section A: 10 MCQs ( 10 marks ) Section B: 5 MCQs ( 5 marks ) Section C: 10 MCQs ( 10 marks ) Section D: 5 MCQs ( 5 marks ) Section E: 10 MCQs ( 10 marks ) Total Questions: 40 Total marks : 40 ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

  5. SECTION A Questions 1 – 10 VOCABULARY • Word Level e.g. roses • Phrase or sentence level e.g. a glass of orange juice Mother is cooking in the kitchen

SECTION B Questions 11 – 15 SOCIAL AND LANGUAGE EXPRESSION Tests pupil’s use of: • correct social expressions with visual clues • appropriate vocabulary based on given situations • parts of speech based on visual and textual clues Study the picture and determine the exact situation. Choose the best sentence to fit the situation.

  7. SECTION C Questions 16 – 25 GRAMMAR 6 questions – grammar 2 questions – spelling 2 questions – punctuation Some questions are stimuli based with graphics.

  8. SECTION D Questions 26 – 30 TEXT COMPLETION • A cloze passage with a composite picture • 5 blanks tests test a candidate’s use of parts of speech ( grammar) including visual and textual clues. Look at the picture carefully and choose the answer from the given options.

  9. SECTION E Questions 31 – 40 READING AND COMPREHENSION • 10 MCQs • 2 passages: a non-linear and a linear passage You may have to think beyond the text. Rely on your experience / prior knowledge in order to answer the questions correctly.

PAPER 1TIPS FOR SECTION A • Read and understand the sentence. • Look at the picture or graphic given and relate it to the given options. • Pupils must read ALL the given answers A, B and C or A, B, C and D before choosing the best word or phrase to fill in the blanks. • Pupils have to ensure that the answer from given options must correspond to the picture given.

TIPS FOR SECTION B • Pupils have to understand thoroughly the situation and dialogue in each picture before choosing the correct response that fits the situation and dialogue. • Ask yourself: What would be the suitable response from the other person or persons in the picture? • Read all the responses given. • Choose the response that you believe fits the dialogue and situation in the picture.

TIPS FOR SECTION C • Read and try to understand the sentence. • Look at the picture or graphic given and try to relate the activities or situation in it with the given answers. • Read ALL the given answers A,B,and C or A, B. C and D before choosing the best word to fill in the blanks. • Ensure that the answer from given options must correspond to the picture given. • Look carefully for all the punctuation marks i.e. the commas, full stops, capital letters, question marks, exclamation marks, etc.

  13. TIPS FOR SECTION D • When answering the cloze passage, pupils have to look at the picture given carefully. Ask yourself. What is the picture about? • Read the passage at least twice to get a general idea of the passage. • Read ALL the given options A,B, and C or A, B,C and D. • Think of all the suitable word for each blank before choosing your answer from the given options.

  14. Ask yourself these questions: * Do my answers make sense? * Are they correct? * Does the passage describe the picture correctly? • What if you are not sure of the answers? You have to make a guess. Never leave any blank empty. • To do well in this section, you have to revise your grammar.
