Elie Wiesel • Born September 30, 1928 in a Jewish family • Born in the town of Sighet, Transylvania • His father was a political man. • At a young age his world revolved around family, religious study, community, and God. • Spent most of his childhood time studying the Talmud and cabbala • He was taken to Auschwitz concentration camp when he was 15 • Elie was separated from his mother and sisters when he first arrived at Auschwitz • He was identified by a tattoo on his arm (A-7713)
Night symbolizes: • A world without God’s presence • Suffering occurs mostly at night • Deportation of Jews • First arrives at Birkenau, Auschwitz, and the horrible run in Buna
Nuremberg Laws (1935) • Denied Jews civil rights and citizenship • Forbade intermarriage • Made intimate liaisons between Jews and non-Jews a crime
Hasidic A Jewish reform movement inspired by the cabbala that spread thought Eastern Europe in the 1700’s. For Hasidic Jews, the divine presence is everywhere, in everything. Therefore, they try to live a life of total dedication to God.
Rosh Hashanah The Jewish New Year. Normally observed in September or October, it marks the beginning of a ten-day period of diving judgment - a time when Jews believe God calls them to account for their actions. The period ends with Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of Atonement. Yom Kippur is devoted to fasting and praying.
Cabbala A form of Jewish mysticism offering mystical insight into divine nature.
Talmud From a word that means “study of learning,” it is a collection of teachings and commentaries on the Torah, the Five Books of Moses. The Five Books of Moses are the first five books of the Old Testament of the Bible.
Zohar The Book of Splendor; a commentary on the Five Books of Moses and the major work of the cabbala.
Deportees People who are banished or exiled from a country.
Gestapo German secret state police. The SS officers would also fall under this category. The SS officers were initially Hitler’s personal bodyguards.
Exterminate Killing on a large scale.
Anti-Semitic Discrimination or prejudice against Jews.
Passover A Jewish holiday that is celebrated eight days each spring to recall the Exodus of the Jewish people from Egypt where they were held in slavery.
Ghetto A part of the city where Jews were required to live.
Deportation The expulsion of someone considered undesirable.
Kaddish A prayer Jews recite in memory of a loved one. It praises and reaffirms a belief in one God.
Auschwitz Site of a Nazi concentration camp in Poland. The sign above the gate reads “Work is Liberty.”
Labor Camp A prison camp where forced labor is performed
