Kuali’s Mission – High Level Software for Higher Education, by Higher Education • Non-profit 501(c)(3) organization • Sustains and evolves administrative software for Institutions of Higher Education

History of Kuali • 2004 Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant for planning • 2005 Kuali launched: 7 university partners, NACUBO & rSmart • 2005 $2.5M Mellon Foundation grant to produce Kuali Financial System (KFS) based on Indiana’s Financial Information System (FIS)
History of Kuali • 2006 $1.5M Mellon grant to start Kuali Coeus (KC) based on MIT’s Coeus project for research administration • 2007 $2.5M from the Mellon Foundation to launch Kuali Student • 2008 Rice became a fully funded project with investing partners
Governance • The Golden Rule: • “Those who bring the gold make the rules” • Foundation is a thin layer; Governance at projects level • Project Boards provide strategy and oversight • Reality Triangle of Resources, Time, and Scope
Governance • Projects are functionally driven, focusing on user requirements and functionality • Functional Councils determine functional specifications and set priorities • Development Teams are formed by investing schools • Project Managers assign work to Development teams based on priorities from the Functional Council
