The Russian Revolution- The Basics • The Russian Revolution actually involved two Revolutions: The October Revolution and the February Revolution. The Russian Revolution replaced the Tsar with a Communist Government.
What Russia was like in 1917 • The working class in Russia were very poor and living in bad conditions. They were hungry and felt the tsar was doing nothing to help them. However, they were still loyal to the tsar and did not want a new government.
“Bloody Sunday” • “Bloody Sunday” began as a peaceful protest about the working class’ poor living conditions. • However, the Tsar believed his power was total and should not be questioned. • At the protest, some of the Tsar’s Palace Guards killed innocent people. • Most people then turned against the Tsar and wanted a new Government
The Russian Revolution and World War I • Russia’s problems only worsened after they entered World War I. • The War was very unpopular and many people did not understand why Russia was fighting in the War. Most people were ready to revolt.
The February and October Revolutions • The Revolution in February 1917 replaced the Tsar with a Government called the Duma. • However, no one in Russia truly supported the Duma and that Government was replaced in October 1917 by a second revolution. • The popular Bolshevik Party took over the Russian Government, transferred to Communism, and soon dropped out of World War I.
