Dewey 23 • Many small ‘tweaks’ to numbers, rather than major areas of change • Many of these small changes have already been incorporated into WebDewey 22 • Take great care when using numbers taken from other records, especially if these are Dewey 22 rather than 23. Always check numbers, rather than assuming that a number is correct

  5. Main kinds of change • Topic moved to a new number • Changes to the scope of a number • New “add tables” • Changes to both scope and number • New historical periods

  8. New Add Tables • “Add tables” are lists of special notation that can be added to a base number to make it more specific. Dewey 23 contains some new add tables • For example, there is a new add table at 155 Differential and developmental psychology

Top 20 Teens … • Class at: 155.51/9 Applied psychology for young people twelve to twenty • The breakdown is: 155.51 General topics of psychology of young people twelve to twenty plus 9 Applied psychology from the add table at 155 • In Dewey 22, you do not have the option of adding 9 for “Applied psychology” so your number would just have been 155.51

Numbers that just don’t exist any more • 721[.046] Architecture and the environment, multiple-purpose buildings • Both the subordinate topics “Architecture and the environment’ & “Multipurpose buildings” have been moved elsewhere – so there is now no purpose for 721.046 and it has been removed

  13. New historical period numbers added

  14. Some areas where there have been many small changes • 320s - Politics • 363-363 - Social problems and services • 808s – Collections of literary texts from more than 2 literatures • Historical period numbers for Italy and SouthEast Asia • New historical period numbers added for many countries

  15. Summary • Many small differences • Ability to create more precise numbers (in some cases) • Always check numbers, and read scope notes carefully
