  2. Your Final Writing – “The Final Analysis” • As stated in the beginning of the year, this class has been about reading comprehension and thinking. Medieval history is simply how you master these two points. • The Final Analysis is simply multi-paragraph essay: • Introduce the Talents Unlimited Thinking Skills • Review: how have these skills been used throughout the historical period we have studied this year? Cite history! • Apply: how will these skills be applied by you in your life? • Value: 40 points, as scored by the Social Studies rubric • Due Date: Friday, June 6th, 2014 • Productive Thinking • Communication • Planning • Forecasting • Decision Making Hmmm…Romans, the Church, Islam, Asia, the early American civilizations, ME! Productive Thinking: many and varied ideas • The Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church: how do we solve the schism? • China: how do we keep the silk road open? • How did the explorers reach the east? Is there a better way? Can we get to the east by sailing west? • Human sacrifice by the Aztecs to please the Gods • How can the Romans control the ever-expanding empire? • China: gunpowder and inventions

Communication: use oral & written words to express ideas • How did the Mayan people communicate? • What did the Mongols do to increase communication along the silk road? • Muslims: calligraphy and geometric designs • Incans people and the use of quipus • Ghana, Songhai & Mali: how can we communicate the Qur’an? • Rome – how did they communicate across a vast empire? • Japan – the folds in the fan • Samurais – dress going into battle

Forecasting: cause & effect of circumstances • What are the long-range impacts for Islam in the West African cultures? • Europeans: what will happen if we bring all this gold back from the new world? • How will Shoguns allow for a better government in Japan? • What happens in China if we use the civil service exams (meritocracy) or money (aristocracy)

  6. Planning: identify materials & equipment needed; steps for action • Japan and the Heian Period: plan for keeping our success in culture going • How can we keep Islam pure across Mali, Ghana and Songhai? • How can we maintain or improve the training of the samurais? • How do we as Incans improve our agricultural practices? • What would happen if we as Mayans would control or expand our slash and burn practices? • How did European rulers plan for voyages to the new world? • How did the Mayans train themselves for the extensive math and astronomy skills they had?

Decision Making: identify your criteria & alternatives • What would go into the decision making process before funding a voyage to the new world? • How did the Roman empire split into various cultures? • What did the Mayans use to create their empire? • Should Justinian rebuild Constantinople or begin again somewhere else? • How do we use Timbuktu as a trading center in northern Africa?
