Scientific Notation and Order of Operations By Kyle Chisholm
Scientific Notation Scientific notation is a way of writing big numbers without actually writing them out. To write scientific notation you write out the numbers of the number that aren’t zero as a decimal higher than zero but smaller than ten,(example: 596,000,000 would be 5.96) multiplied by 10 to the power of x.
Example Example: 596,000,000 would be 5.96x10⁸. You put 10 to the power of eight because it you must move the decimal in 5.96 to the right eight times to get the original number. 596,000,000 5.960000000 →→→→→→→→
Order of Operations Order of operations tells you in which order to solve a problem for example if you had 100-3³x(5-2) you would think you do 100-3³ then multiply that by 3 but really you would do what’s in parentheses first, then do 3³, and finally do 100 minus that. This is because order of operations.
Order of Operation You do this because order of operations says you do the operations in this order: First, you do what’s in Parentheses. Second, you do the exponents. Third, you do the multiplication and division in which ever order they appear in.(For example if it was 6x4/12 you would do 6x4 then 24/12. Or if it was 9/3x4 you would do 9/3 then 3x4) Finally, you do addition and subtraction in which ever order they appear in like division and multiplication.
Way 1: PEMDAS There are two methods for memorizing order of operation. The first way takes the word makes each operation into a letter and you say it as a word: Pemdas.
Way 2: P.E.M.D.A.S The second method is like the first method except it is an acronym instead of a word. P being please, E being excuse, M being my, D being dear, A being aunt, and S being Sally. So if you put it together it is: Please excuse my dear aunt Sally.
