History • 122 A.D : Roman emperor Hadrian build Pons Aelius • 1080 : The new castle was built by Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the conqueror • 1174 : The Scots king William the Lion was imprisoned in Newcastle • 13th century : Newcastle developed as a merchant and trading community • 1400 : Newcastle is made a county in its own right • 1600 : The population of Newcastle stood around 10,000. • 1650 : About 400,000 tons of coal are exported from new castle every year. From the late seventeenth century the town became a regional centre • 1711 : The first new paper published in the north of England • 19thcentury : Outbreaks of cholera • 1891 : The population of Newcastle-upon-Tyne was around 186,300. • 1892 : Newcastle United Football Club was founded.

The dialect • The dialect of Newcastle is known as Geordie, and contains a large amount of vocabulary that is not used in other parts of the UK • The Geordie dialect has much of its origins in the language spoken by the Anglo- Saxon
Culture • Newcastle has become a cultural hub in the past few years • It has a good nightlife, a strong reputation as a poetry center, many theatres and so on
