The Road to Revolution… THE FINALE
Unit 3, Journal #4 • Would you consider the Tea Act and the Boston Tea Party the TURNING POINT toward rebellion? • Make two columns, one marked yes, one marked no and provide one detailed response under each.
The Boston Tea Party • Regardless of the variation in opinions surrounding the Boston Tea Party, Bostonians and all colonials realized that they simply could not see eye to eye with the British. • Propaganda was put out showing the “tarring and feathering” of a British tax agent… • Let’s see how much symbolism you can find.
Consequences • The British did not overlook the Boston Tea Party • King George III was infuriated by the “organized destruction” and open tyranny of the colonists in Boston. • PARLIAMENT MUST ACT! • Parliament issues the “Coercive Acts” • Later renamed the “Intolerable Acts” by colonists.
The “Intolerable” Acts • A series of “rules” set forth in 1774 that finally pushed the colonists over the edge. • The final laws included: • Shutting down Boston Harbor • Quartering of troops in colonists’ homes • General Thomas Gage (commander in chief of the British forces) is appointed as the new governor of Massachusetts. • GAGE PLACES BOSTON UNDER MARTIAL LAW, or rule imposed by military forces. • King George hoped to isolate Massachusetts and punish them personally, but the colonies remained UNIFIED.
Making an Analogy • In pairs, you will make analogies. When you are finished, we will share them with the class. • In your notebooks, one partner will choose the colonial perspective, the other will choose the British perspective. You must complete the following analogy: PARTNER 1 Colonists are to the Intolerable Acts as ____________________ is to _____________________ PARTNER 2 Britain is to the Coercive Acts as ___________________ is to ______________________
Example • MR. RYANis to WMC as DUMBLEDORE is to HOGWARTS
The First Continental Congress • The colonists quickly move into action and assemble the First Continental Congress. • Sept. 1774- • 56 Delegates met in Philadelphia. • Drew up a declaration of colonial rights • This declaration defended the colonies’ right to run their own affairs • Supported all protests and affairs in Massachusetts. • If the British should use force against the colonies, the colonists should fight back! • Decided to reconvene in May of 1775 if their demands were still not met.
