  1. ‘coz I had a bad day The truth about depression…

  2. What is it?

  3. Some important terms: • SELF – AWARENESS  being aware of your personal traits, feelings and behaviours. Your individuality. • SELF ESTEEM  they way you feel about yourself. Can be positive or negative.

  4. What are the causes? • Loss • Trauma • Chemical and physical changes  serotonin • Can be hereditary • Linked to drug and alcohol abuse • Difficulty in dealing with a situation/particular event

  5. Symptoms • There are many symptoms but these are the three most important signs:

  6. Symptoms… • A loss of interest in the things you usually enjoy doing.

  7. Symptoms… • Deep sadness that never seems to go away.

  8. Symptoms… • Constantly feeling highly irritable and angry.

  9. Symptoms… • Intense anxiety, guilt or feelings of hopelessness • Crying a lot • Either overeating or under eating • Sleeping too much or not being able to sleep at all • Being tired all the time and finding it hard to concentrate • Feeling the only way out of your misery is by dying or killing yourself.

  10. Can you get over it and feel normal again? • It’s a disease so rarely goes away by itself. • There are options: • Tell someone you trust so they can help you find help. • Psychotherapy • Support groups • Medication (anti – depressants) DEAL WITH DEPRESSION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AS IT IS CONSIDERED THE LEADING CAUSE OF SUICIDE

  11. Are anti-depressants addictive? • They are not addictive.

  12. What causes a person to consider suicide as an option? • Overwhelming feelings of hopelessness that lead to people feeling like there’s no reason to carry on living. • Mental illness • The use of alcohol or drugs – people use to help them with their depression. Using lessons a person’s self-control may encourage suicidal thoughts.

  13. How do you know if your friend is at risk? and if its serious or just attention seeking? • ALL SUICIDE THREATS OR ATTEMPS SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. 75% of all suicides do give warning to friends and family about their intentions. A suicide attempt may be a way of attracting attention, but more importantly it is a cry for help. • Some warning signs include:  If a friend starts talking about suicide. Withdrawing from friends and family and rather wanting to be alone • Sudden mood changes • Behavioural changes (sleeping, eating or sexual habits change) • Preparing for death (giving away personal belongings)

  14. How do I help them? DO NOT TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR MAKING THEM WELL AGAIN! You are not a therapist • Urge them to seek help – from: • A Doctor • A counsellor • A social worker • A psychologist

  15. Then what? You can ask them about their thoughts in a very caring and straightforward way. If they had been considering suicide, you wouldn’t be putting thoughts into their head – because they’re already thinking about it. DO NOT PROMISE SECRECY. Immediately tell someone you trust. Let them know that you are there to support them and that you care. Listen to them and give them lots of emotional support.

  16. Final thoughts.. • Suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems. • It is not a sign of weakness as it is caused by an illness.
