  2. What is a drug/narcotic? Substance other than food intended to alter the structure or function of the body. • Reduce Pain • Alter Mood/Behavior • Treatment for Illness

  3. Legal Drugs • Caffeine • Nicotine • Ephedrine • DXM • Alcohol • Etc.

  4. Most common illegal drugs • Cocaine • Methamphetamine • Heroin • Ecstasy • Marijuana

  5. Arguments favoring legalization • Eliminate Criminal Market • Regulate and control the market (i.e. prescription, licensing, laws on sales to minors, advertising regulations etc.) • Social issue minimizes incarceration . • Restore rights and Responsibilities • Prohibition unnecessarily criminalizes millions of otherwise law-abiding people. • Financial Gain • Sales Tax (i.e. cigarettes) 4. Medical

  6. Comes from earth! • Marijuana/ Cannabis • Cocaine/ Coca plant • Heroin, Opium/ Poppy Plant • Khat

  7. Arguments favoring keeping drugs illegal. The Center of Disease Control released a statement that drug related deaths were higher than alcohol related deaths in 2009. The amount of money saved in the prison systems will not be sufficient to cover the millions of dollars that will be necessary to cover rehabilitation and addiction problems. An Addict is an Addict.

  8. Keeping them illegal cont. Accessibility to minors. Consequences in public safety. More problems when combined with other “legal” drugs like alcohol. Behavior/Communication problems within the families, workplace, general public.

  9. Other facts to consider: • There are alternatives for medical use! • Black Market (i.e. cigarettes in NY) • Long term health issues to include child development issues. • Global impact
