Iran-contra Scandal By beccaRahaim
Contra is a Latin preposition meaning "against“The Contrasis a label given to the various rebel groups opposing communism of the National government in Nicaragua that were active from 1979 through to the early 1990s.
At first Ronald Reagan asked Congress if he could help out the Contras but Congress blatantly said no.
Even though congress said no to helping the Contras, Reagan had an idea of his own. Reagan decided to sell weapons to Iran. Which was not a smart idea. America has no formal diplomatic relations with Iran; they just had a rebellion against their government and could easily turn on us with the weapons Reagan illegally sold them.
After selling Iran the overprices weapons Iran released six American captives. Reagan took the money and donated it to the Contras in Nicaragua.
Although laws had been broken, and Reagan's image suffered as a result of Iran-Contra, his popularity rebounded. In 1989 he left office with the highest approval rating of any president since Franklin Roosevelt.
Iran-contra scandal • Reagan asks permission to help out an anti-communist group in Nicaragua • Congress says no • (in secrecy) Reagan sold weapons to Iran and in return Iran released six American hostages and gave America some money • Reagan then gave that money to the Contras(anti-communist group in Nicaragua) • Reagan’s reputation was damaged but not to the point that everyone hated him.
