  4. Purpose of Transition • To ensure that the student begins the new year with all the necessary supports in place to allow him/her to be successful.

  5. Who is eligible for kindergarten • All students who are five by September 1st • Early Entrance to kindergarten • Students that turn five between September 1st and December 31st. • Have to be screened

  6. Kindergarten Information • Curriculum and Standards • What does the day look like? • What does my child need to know to go to kindergarten.

  7. Making the transition smooth • Communication is critical • Home and school • Preschool and Kindergarten teams-including related service providers • Complete the “What Works” forms and pass on to home school • Participate in meetings (if there are any) for your child

  8. Making the transition smooth • Get to know your home school and prepare your child • Sign up for your home school’s and the district listserve • Attend Kindergarten Orientation nights January 24-check your school for the time • Attend Meet the Teacher night • Visit the school

  12. Special Education Process If your child does not receive special education services you are welcome to stay, but feel free to leave.

  13. Purpose of the process • To determine special education eligibility for kindergarten • To ensure student success • To share information with the elementary school staff • To ensure that the necessary supports for student success are in place

Eligibility Categories • Preschool • SLI • DD • PSD • HI • VI • School Aged • SLI • DD (until 8 years old) • SLD • Intellectual Disability (mild, moderate, severe) • Autism • Other Health Impaired • Orthopedic impairment • Emotional Disability • Traumatic Brain Injury • Multiple Disabilities • Multiple Disabilities with Severe Sensory Impairment • VI • HI

Transition process for children receiving special education services • Transition Team: • Parent • Anyone parents invite • Preschool staff • Teacher • Speech Pathologist • Related Service Providers • OT; PT; Vision: Hearing; Nurse; Behavior Specialist • Home school staff- • Administration • Psychologist • School age speech pathologist • General education teacher (for the MET and IEP) • School age special education teacher

Process and Meetings • Preschool notifies home school of incoming students • RED (review of existing data meeting) • Evaluation (if needed) • MET (multidisciplinary-educational team meeting) • IEP (if needed) • Best setting for meeting a child’s needs (LRE) is determined at this meeting. • Decisions are made as a team-parents are a critical part of this team.

  18. MET • Second meeting • MET • Multi-Disciplinary Evaluation Team • Examine the summary of testing data • Discuss the eligibility criteria for all categories of disability • Does the child meet eligibility criteria for special education when they enter kindergarten?

IEP • Part two of second meeting OR third meeting • IEP • Individual Education Plan • If child qualifies for special education as a kindergartener, a new IEP will be written • Will provide supports for remainder of preschool and kindergarten • In what setting will this IEP be put into place for Kindergarten? • Least Restrictive Environment • General education classroom with supports in place • Resource classroom • Extended resource classroom
