Excerpt from Charlotte’s Web Fern pushed the chair out of the way and ran outdoors. The grass was wet and the air smelled of springtime. Fern’s sneakers were sopping by the time she caught up with her father. “Please don’t kill it!” She sobbed. “It’s unfair.” Mr. Arable stopped walking. “Fern,” he said gently, “you will have to learn to control yourself.” “Control myself?” yelled Fern. “This is a matter of life and death, and you talk about controlling myself.” Tears ran down her cheeks and she took hold of the ax and tried to pull it out of her father’s hand.
The Witches Excerpt In fairy tales, witches always wear silly black hats and black cloaks, and they ride on broomsticks. But this is not a fairy tale. This is about real witches. The most important thing you should know about real witches is this. Listen carefully. Never forget what is coming next. Real witches dress in ordinary clothes and look like ordinary women. They live in ordinary houses and they work ordinary jobs. That is why they are so hard to catch. A real witch hates children with a red hot sizzling hatred that is more sizzling and red hot than any hatred you could possibly imagine.
Group Work • Read the passage independently and annotate before conferring with your group. • Cite evidence from your text and determine the character traits of your character by using the S.T.E.A.L technique. • Using the list of character traits, choose at least two adjectives that can be used to describe the character.
