  1. Lecture 12OPNET - ITGURU

  2. OPNET IT Guru Academic Edition • Academic software available at: • www.opnet.com/itguru-academic/mk-setup.html • enables to better understand the core concepts of networking and equips them to effectively troubleshoot and manage real-world network infrastructures. • provides a Virtual Network Environment that models the behavior of your entire network, including its routers, switches, protocols, servers, and individual applications. • diagnose difficult problems • validate changes before they are implemented • plan for future scenarios (i.e. growth or failure)

  4. Using OPNET Using the project Editor

  6. Scenario Comparison of RTS/CTS, Fragmentation and simple wireless network • First Scenario • This scenario has two wireless LAN-based workstations in • a simple network configuration (Independent BSS). • Second Scenario • This simple scenario has two wireless LAN-based workstations in • the basic network configuration (Independent BSS). In this network • both workstations are configured so that data received from the • higher layer is fragmented before transmission. • Third Scenario • This simple scenario has two wireless LAN-based workstations in • a basic network configuration (Independent BSS). The RTS/CTS • exchange is enabled in both stations.

  7. Scenario Comparison of RTS/CTS, Fragmentation and simple wireless network Statistics compared are: • 1. Control Traffic Rcvd • 2. Throughput • 3. Media Access Delay • 4. Channel Reservation

  8. Scenario: DCF (Distributed Coordinated Funtion vs. PCF(Point coordination Function) • This scenario has eight wireless LAN-based workstations in • a simple network configuration (Infrastructured BSS) which • demonstrates the PCF access method used by the Wireless LAN.

  9. Scenario: DCF (Distributed Coordinated Funtion vs. PCF(Point coordination Function) PCF provides a contention-free (CF) frame transfer. The medium access during the CF is regulated by the Point Coordinator (PC) which resides in the access point (AP). DCF_Wkstn 3 and DCF_Wkstn 4 are not PCF enabled. The traffic flows between the stations have been configured as, PCF_wkstn 1 <--------> PCF_wkstn 2 DCF_wkstn 3 <--------> DCF_wkstn 4 PCF_wkstn 5 --------> PCF_wkstn 4 PCF_wkstn 6 <--------> PCF_wkstn 7 All the PCF related configuration parameters are grouped into a single compound attribute "PCF Parameters". The stations can participate in frame transfers during CF period by enabling the "PCF Functionality" attribute on the work stations.

  10. Scenario: DCF (Distributed Coordinated Funtion vs. PCF(Point coordination Function) Statistics Studied: • The number of retransmissions • The throughput
