Paste inTips for Making Data Tables • Make a data table before starting the experiment. • Always use a pencil and a ruler. • Include a descriptive title. (I.V. + D.V.) • The first column/row is labeled with the independent (manipulated) variable with units. • The second column/row is labeled with the dependent (responding) variable with units. • Data should be collected in ordered pairs
Create a Data Table for the data below. • Twenty-five students ride the bus to school • Twenty students walk to school • Ten students are driven to school • Five more students ride their bikes than are driven to school.
Paste inTips for Making Graphs • Always use a pencil, ruler, and graph paper. • Use the correct type of graph to display data (Bar – comparison; line – time, trend, or pattern; pie/circle – percent) • Include a descriptive title. (I.V. + D.V.) • Label the X (horizontal) axis with the independent/manipulated variable and its units. • Label the Y (vertical) axis with the dependent/responding variable and its units. • Use an appropriate scale for each variable (use as much graph space as possible). • Include a key or legend when appropriate (top right of graph).
Paste in Example Graph with Labels Title Y - axis Dependent (responding) variable X - axis Independent (manipulated) variable
Bar Graphs: Used for comparison • Used anytime the X-axis has words
Line Graphs Used for change over time Or RELATIONSHIPS
Circle Graph / Pie Charts 100% 50% 50% 25% 25% 25% 25% • A protractor should be used to make a circle. • Today we will use a petri dish to make a neat circle.
