The Use of Predator Drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for Counter-Terrorism and Military Use • Committee of Disarmament and International Security (CDIS) • Chair: Jeffrey Chang
Background Information: • UAVs have been used since World War I • Since 2005, UAV combat usage increased by 1200% • UAVs cause unfair warfare, and often result in innocent civilian casualties
Terms Defined: • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs): Vehicles in which travel above land/sea, in which has the ability to be controlled remotely or through Artificial Intelligence (AI). UAVs are generally used in More Economically Developed Countries (MEDCs) with a stronger military, such as the majority of European nations, as well as USA and China. • Predator Drones: Predator Drones are a genre of UAVs, this genre is completely unmanned, however, carries missiles and weapons in which can target enemies with a high-accuracy. Can be used for purposes of destroying targets in which may previously be hard to destroy, as well surveillance purposes - creating an unfair advantage for Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs)
UAV Capabilities: • Surveillance Missions • Attack with precision (Missile payload) • Long-distanced flights • Launched from any land & platforms • Detect hidden regions
Timeline of Information • 1914-1915: First UAV technology tested and used (World War I) • 1930s: US Research on Drone Devices • 1960s: UAV used in multiple wars, including Vietnam War • 1970s: First successful usage of combat UAV
Timeline of Information • 1990s-2010: Drones have served as peacekeepers and combat weapons by nations, as US continues to strengthen their UAVs • 2001 - present: Drones are used in combat regions of the Middle East, causing unfair advantage to the LEDCs • 2009: Criticism of drone usage appears as incidents of drone attacks on civilian were reported
