  2. Teaching in English - My Experiences • The Ohio State University • TA for Pascal/Java Programming Courses 1997 ~ 2002 • Auburn University • 6 different courses 2002 ~ 2008 • National Central University • 3 courses taught in English 2009 ~ 2011

  3. Why Do I Teaching in English at NCU? • For students • Force them to listen English – The ability to communicate with others in English is crucial for their career in the future • Some may study abroad, and mostwill travel abroad!!! • For myself • Try to find opportunity to practice my English • $$ ;-)

  4. Why Teaching in English is Difficult? • For students - Not many students appreciate such opportunity • Flee to other sessions • Drop the course • Low attendance • Poor grades – the most convenient excuse • For teachers • Low evaluation scores • No motivation – especially for undergrad courses

  5. How US University Deals w/ Foreign Student’s Poor English? • TOEFL/GRE/GMAT/… • Placement Test during Grad Student Orientation • Composition Exam for everyone • Oral Exam for Future TAs (Required by Law in Many States) • A wide selections of ESL courses • Language Partners • Church Activities

  6. My Suggestions - For students • When to start? - The earlier, the better! • Orientation for students • Define some “core courses” (for each college?) that will always be taught in English • English Competitions • Admit more foreign students • Advertising it as 央大特色!

  7. My Suggestions - For teachers • Minimize the impact of the evaluation scores during promotion process if courses are taught in English • More $$ :-D
