  2. Setting • Provides a backdrop • Often sets the mood or atmosphere • Shapes character and action • Reflects character psychology (inner turmoil enhanced by storm) • Created through details: realistic and authentic and use of senses (smell, see, hear)

  3. Atmosphere • The mood/tone or overall feeling of the story • Created through detail and imagery • May change throughout • Scary, funny, mysterious, dramatic, sunny... • What is the atmosphere at the start of the story?

  4. Characters • Will have a set of values • Are revealed through emotions and feelings • Have goals, hopes and dreams • Work through problems and conflicts: protagonist and antagonist • Author’s tools: • Name and appearance • Occupation, habits and actions • What they say and what others say about them

  5. Structure • Exposition: background info about characters, setting and situation • Rising action as the tension increases • Complication: the twist that creates interest • Climax: the highest point of dramatic action • Resolution: conclusion of story

  6. Additional elements • Foreshadowing • Symbols • Style: word choice, sentence complexity, patterns of sound, imagery • Point of view: omniscient, first person, third person. • Theme: the main ideas or universal truth the author conveys.
