  2. Learning Goals: • SWBAT create thesis statements.

What is a thesis statement? • Thesis statement: a central argument of an essay • It is like a topic sentence for a paragraph but for your whole paper • A good thesis statement takes a position you believe and can support with evidence and research. • A good thesis statement is at the center of any essay or paper.

  4. Remember: a thesis is brief! • A thesis statement should only be one sentence, but it includes all of your reasoning! Topic Sentences Topic Sentence Paragraph #1: The way you dress can have a big impact on an interview panel’s first impressions of you. Thesis Statement A job interview can often make or break your chances of getting your dream job. There are several things that you can do in an interview to increase the possibility of your success such as dressing properly, answering interview questions thoroughly, and asking good questions at the end of the interview. Topic Sentence- Paragraph #2: An interview is an opportunity for potential employers to get to know you better, so it is important that you answer each question as completely as possible. Topic Sentence- Paragraph #3: By preparing some thoughtful questions for the end of the interview, you can show the panel that you have prepared for the interview and want the job.

  5. Remember: a thesis is brief! • A thesis statement should be specific, with one main idea! • A strong thesis statement should also take a stand!

  6. Persuasive Essay • The first step of creating your own thesis statement is turning you topic into a debatable argument.

  7. Let’s say your topic is college athletes.

  8. Think of an essential question for college athletes. • Let’s ask: • Should college athletes be paid for playing college sports?

  11. Or A • College athletes should NOT be paid for playing college sports.

  12. Can you think of arguments for the following topics? • Should smoking be allowed at parks and other outdoor public venues? • Should the voting age be lowered to 13?

  13. Then you need to think of your supporting subpoints (PROS): • A – College athletes should be paid for playing college sports BECAUSE • PRO – they could be playing professional sports • PRO – they could injure themselves and potentially ruin their athletic career.

  14. Then you need to think of your supporting factors (PROS): • A – College athletes should NOT be paid for playing college sports BECAUSE • PRO – they are already receiving free tuition • PRO – they gain exposure and increase their chances for securing a professional contract.

  15. Assignment for Today: • On a loose leaf piece of paper write your essential question and your argument (opinion) for that topic. You can write this on your PRO/ CON page from last week. • Today we must also add the subpoints to your thesis statement. • The goal of today is to have a completed thesis statement. Also, we must complete page 17 in your research paper packet.
