"I Will Be Successful If..." Rachelle Dumaguing Mrs. Radwick Health Period 1
Exercise - Cardio I will exercise on Sundays at the park around 10 A.M. by playing basketball until lunch time, so I can relieve tension and stress. pg. 83
Food I will eat at least 9 fruits and veggies every day at home and at SDSU by eating 2 - 3 fruits or veggies for breakfast, 3 - 4 fruits or veggies for lunch, and 2 - 3 fruits or veggies for dinner. I will achieve my goal of eating at least 9 fruits and veggies daily so I can get the vitamins, minerals, and energy I need to get me through the day, and to keep my immune system strong enough to fight bad germs or viruses that can get me sick. pg. 172
Build Muscle Strength I will build up my muscle strength 4 times a week; Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday during ENS class, and at home on Sundays by lifting light weights for 30 minutes. I am going to do this so that I can become more flexible with my joints, have more control over my movements, gain endurance, and because it'll help prevent many future back injuries. pg. 127
Sleep I will get 8 hours of sleep by being in bed, falling asleep by 10:30 P.M. every school night, so that I can wake up early. Sleep is important to me because it's what helps me stay alert, keeps me up and going during the day, and without it, I could get sick from exhaustion. pg. 84
Self-Esteem I will raise my self-esteem every single day for as long as I live by taking risks and doing new things that may be a little uncomfortable for me. I will learn to love myself as much as others love me because having a high self-esteem can make me happy and active, and that causes me to have a healthy diet, be free from diseases, and I'll be more healthy. pg. 50
Stress I will reduce stress by dancing with my friends at my boyfriend's dance class every Saturday; going straight to the dance studio after I go home from UB to drop off my laundry and such. Because if I don't make time for myself to relax and just have fun, the stress on my body can get me sick, and reducing stress makes me feel better. pg. 82
Positive Decisions I will make positive decisions by keeping myself up to date and organized with my social life and school work. Every day at home, I will write in and consult my agenda or planner. Because knowing what needs to be done will prevent me from having to stress on trying to remember what homework assignments are due when, what events I have to attend, and such. Especially since I'm pretty forgetful, this will keep me away from the consequences such as failing a class because I forgot to turn in certain assignments or I struggled on a test. pg. 29
Great Relationships I will build a great relationship with my mom throughout the rest of our lives by letting her know that I love her every single day, by giving her respect, and by doing what she tells me to do like a good daughter should. At home, I will help her watch my little brother and do chores around the house with little complaint. In doing so, I will receive her trust and respect in return for mines. All great relationships are based on love, trust, honesty, and respect. This will make me happy and emotionally, mentally, environmentally, socially healthy. pg. 418
Drug-Alcohol I will not drink alcohol until I'm allowed to do so legally, which is at the age of 21, if I can't avoid it forever. Because it's better than the alternative, I will drink Arizona Green Tea in replace of alcohol at home/parties or when I want to "drown in my sorrows" or whatever. If I drink alcohol, I will become vulnerable to the addiction brought by physical and emotional drives. Unlike Arizona Green Tea, which is also something I can work off through exercising. pg. 247
Coping I will cope with the fact that my best friend and I don't really talk anymore, by making new friends in UB. I will also talk to my old best friend occasionally so that we are, in the least, still acquainted well enough to call each other friends. If I cope with this situation in this healthy way, I can avoid the emotions of anger, depression, and stress. pg. 27
Sexual Activity I will practice abstinence until I'm married or until I know I'm ready to stay committed to one partner, in order to avoid sexual activity. Even if/when I do engage in sexual activity, it will be at a minimum. If I do have sex, there would be a high possibility that I could get AIDs, STDs, HIV, or pregnant, which are variables that affect my health. pg. 460
Reproductive System I will keep my reproductive system clean by having good hygiene; I take a shower every night before I go to bed. I'll also attend Doctor check-ups every 4 months or so. Good hygiene keeps my reproductive system healthy because it prevents vaginal irritation or infection and other problems that affect my health. & pg. 441
Compromise I will compromise with my boyfriend over the amount of time we should have for each other and spend together per month or weekly. I will do this by planning ahead of time and consulting our planners together, so that we have a better understanding about why we may be busy and such. We can meet up at each others' house or discuss certain it over the phone. Doing so will keep us both healthy because we'll feel trust, respect, love, and that connection that has our relationship build and grow stronger. pg. 411
Media Influences I will not let media influence me because most commercials just want money; they persuade you to buy their products that aren't good or healthy for you, and most products don't even really work. I will make sure to do my research and ask my doctor if I need any information on certain products. I will watch less TV, limiting myself to only 2 hours or so during weekends, since I don't have to worry about TV while I'm at SDSU. Because of this goal, I will get mentally healthier, make positive decisions, and be healthy overall. pg. 238
Tobacco I will not use tobacco in my entire lifetime. I will say no, even if people try to peer pressure me. Instead of smoking, I will have the smoker (if they're my friend) do something more productive, like go dancing at a party or swimming at the pool at my apartment. When you smoke, nicotine stimulates the brain reward system, increases heart rate and blood pressure, increases breathing rate, increases blood-sugar levels, and stimulates the vomiting reflex. Do I want tobacco to affect my body? I DON'T THINK SO! pg. 267
Heart Disease I will prevent myself from getting a heart disease by being active and elevating my heart rate at a healthy range. I will exercise weekly during ENS when we work out, or when I play sports during Rec. time. If I stay fit by exercising regularly, I will be healthy because it has been shown that exercise is a very significant factor in preventing the development of illnesses such as chronic disease. pg. 127
Optimal Weight I will eat healthier, exercise, sleep 8 hours a day, raise my self-esteem, and avoid things that will harm my body in order to have a healthy optimal weight. I am going to do this every day by doing all of my goals while I'm in UB and at home because if my weight is close to the average BM, I'll have a lower chance of getting diseases from too much or too little body fat. pg. 197
Cancer I will prevent myself from being diagnosed with cancer for my entire lifetime by safeguarding my skin. I will always wear sunscreen and wear protective clothing to cover my skin so it's not exposed to the damaging UV radiation. If I don't protect my skin from the sun, I could get skin cancer. pg. 354
Diabetes I will prevent myself from getting diabetes by reducing the amount of stress in my life, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding tobacco products. Every day at home or at SDSU during ENS, I will exercise and eat right. I will also stay optimistic instead of stressing myself out in order to stay healthy and be diabetes free. pg. 358
Goals I will achieve all of my goals by staying committed, trying hard, giving my best, never giving up, and by making sure I accomplish my goals every day by checking my agenda and such. I will reach all of my goals in order to have faith in myself, be strong, and to become as healthy as can be. pg. 38
