  2. Making the Decision to Enroll • Become familiar with the requirements for proposed major at your chosen campus • www.assist.org • www.uctransfer.org • Department websites • Online catalogs • Contact with department advisors • Campus visits – attend their open house events!

  3. Making the Decision to Enroll • Conditions of Admission • Complete all coursework with successful grades • Application Update: February deadline • Notify campus of any change on courses In Progress • Accurate reporting of transcript(s) • Financial Aid – Not applicable to International Students • UC priority FASFA deadline: March 2 • Unofficial financial aid award letters available online • Award letters made available prior to the Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) deadline

  4. Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) • You cannot send more than one (1) Statement of Intent to Register. • If you send an SIR to more than one campus, all admission reviews on your application will STOP! • SIR is due June 1st for Transfer Students

  5. After Statement of Intent to Register (SIR): • Establish E-mail communication • Set up your e-mail account to the campus • Check e-mail often! • Respond to all requests for information • Submit Statement of Legal Residence • Complete online by deadline • Undocumented students are considered for AB 540 • Request IGETC Certification from your counselor • Send official transcripts: July 15 deadline

After SIR: Important Reminders • Student health services • Immunization documents, insurance requirements • Housing decisions • Be aware of university housing deadlines. • College and department advising materials • Read thoroughly! • Contact academic advisor early with questions. • Sign up for an orientation – All campuses let you register during orientation!!

Orientation • Registration for fall quarter/semester courses • Academic advising • Bring unofficial copies of transcript(s) • Bring test scores if necessary (TOEFL?) • Contact Orientation office if they are unable to attend a session • Placement Exams • Foreign Language, Math, Chemistry may be required

Issues UC Transfer Students Face Academic Issues: • Pace of quarter v. semester terms • Time management skills • Ask for help early! • UC’s are research focused • Theory-based education = learning new research methods • Previous work and GPA • Surprise/frustration when certain courses do not transfer as expected • GPA from community college is not calculated into UC GPA • Pressure to do well in the first term

  9. Issues UC Transfer Students Face • Reading and writing skills • Quantity and analytic nature of reading and writing • Study Skills • Time management strategies • Each hour in class requires 2-3 hours study time

Issues UC Transfer Students Face • Preparing for career and/or graduate school • Can be overwhelming when added on top of other academic priorities • Seek early assistance from career services • Graduate school: start planning first year • Faculty can be great resources for: • Research opportunities • Refining career goals • Letters of recommendation
