“King of Kings” • Lesson 4 • God is More Powerful than Other gods
Refocus on the Focus • Our study looks at how God reveals Himself to Israel in the Exodus • One major theme in Exodus is God’s supremacy • This week, we’ll observe God’s supremacy over the gods
Manmade Gods • Almost every culture in human history has had a concept of gods • The presence of gods has historically “explained” the inexplicable. • Gods have more power than humans, and must therefore be appeased
Exodus 12:12 • “On all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgements: I am Yahweh” • Narrow context is the 10th plague • Broader context is the 10 plagues
Plagues and Gods • Water changed to blood - Hapi • Swarms of frogs - Heqt • Dust to lice - Geb • Swarms “of flies?” - see Ex. 8:23 • Livestock die - Apis/Hathor
Plagues and Gods • Boils - Imhotep • Hailstorm - Nut • Swarm of locust - Seth/Thurmuthis • Darkness - Amon-Ra • Passover - All the gods (Ex. 12:12)
Message of the Plagues • God is revealing truths concerning Himself to Israel • What truths are on display in these displays of power of Egypt’s gods?
Supremacy • God introduces His power over the other gods • If they were to be feared, He is to be feared more
Providence • God has invited His people into the desert • He has the creative and providential power to care for them
Redemption • The gods were something to be feared • God has delivered them from the powers that incited fear!
