What are the current offerings for 4th year math students at the High School? Reasons for current courses: • 3 credits were required in the past in mathematics to graduate • Students were offered Geometry in or beyond 9th grade • 4th year math was typically taken by students who are pursuing a math and/or science career and/or attending college AP Stat AP Calc Calc Principles Trig Pre Calc Principles Alg III/Trig Math Applications and Concepts
What are the proposed offerings for 4th year math students at the High School? • Students are now required to earn 4 credits in mathematics to graduate. • Geometry is now available to students in 8th grade. • To adequately prepare our graduates with a mathematical foundation that will allow them to select areas of concentration in post-secondary education. What are the Avon Grove HS Mathematics Goals moving into 2012-2013 and beyond? • Incorporate two additional courses: • Calculus Applications • This course will be primarily concerned with developing students’ understanding of the fundamentals of differential calculus through applications. • Cryptography • This course will introduce students to elementary concepts of number theory through the study of cryptography, the art of secret writing.
Outline of Calculus Applications Course The outline of the course would be different from Calculus Principles by: • Prerequisites: • More emphasis on Trigonometric Functions (continue from Alg 3/Trig or Trig/Precalc) • Less emphasis on Logarithmic Functions • Limits: • More emphasis on rate of change with average speed & instantaneous speed • Less emphasis on the limit as h approaches 0 • Derivatives: • More emphasis on applications of derivatives, derivatives of polynomials • Less emphasis on the formal definition, derivates of trig/exponential & logarithmic functions
How will Calculus Applications support our students? • More application background to provide purpose for mathematics • Will better prepare our students for mathematics opportunities in post-secondary education • Provide lab activities/opportunities to explore the real-life impacts of rates of change (derivatives)
What resources will support our students in Calculus Applications? • Calculus Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic by Finney, Demana, Waits & Kennedy • Graphing Calculators • Other supplemental materials currently owned (for application labs)
Outline of Cryptography Course Cryptography Alphabet is mapped, shifted • 1st Marking Period • 2nd Marking Period • 3rd Marking Period • 4th Marking Period Number Theory Divisibility, LCM, GCF, algorithms Number Theory and Cryptography Mapping blocks of numbers Linear Algebra and Cryptography How to cipher, decipher
How will Cryptography support our students? • Satisfies need for fourth year math • Offers alternative to Calculus, Statistics, and MAC • Gets at the “why” behind the “what” of mathematics • Will engage students in mathematical thinking, reasoning and problem solving who are not typically interested in mathematics • Direct application: Students will learn mathematics in context, answering the question, “When am I going to use this?” (Non-physical science application of math) • Provide students opportunity to explore topics that may support their college career selection
What resources will support our students in Cryptography? • Mostly teacher generated resources derived from primary sources (textbooks, articles, websites…) • Free downloads of Java Applets for educational use
