  2. Reproduction • All living things can reproduce. This means they can produce offspring similar to themselves. Reproduction occurs in the reproductive system. The reproductive system in humans matures during puberty, around the age of thirteen. The Male Reproductive System • The male reproductive organs make up the male reproductive system. • The two testiclesmake spermatozoids continuously. • The spermatozoids leave the body through an organ calledpenis.Theurethrais inside the penis.

  3. The Female Reproductive System • The two ovaries produce ova. Each month one of the ovaries produces one ovum. • The two fallopian tubes join the ovaries to the uterus. • The uterus is the hollow organ where the baby develops during pregnancy. • The vagina is an elastic canal. It goes from the uterus to the outside of the body.

  4. Fertilization • For a baby to develop, a male sex cell (the spermatozoid) and a female sex cell (the ovum) must unite. Spermatozoids • Spermatozoids are the male sex cells. They are the male cells responsible for reproduction. The testicles produce spermatozoids from puberty onward.

  5. The Ova • The ova are the female sex cells. They are the female cells responsible for reproduction. A baby girl has a lot of ova in her ovaries when she is born. The ova begin to mature when the girl reaches puberty. About every 28 days, one ovum matures in one of the ovaries. • The body expels the unfertilized ovum along with a small amount of blood. We call this menstruation or the period.

  6. Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tubes of the female reproductive system. • Fertilization may take place if it meets a spermatozoid in the fallopian tubes. • Spermatozoids enter the fallopian tubes after sexual intercourse. The spermatozoid enters an ovum in the fallopian tube and fertilizes it. • The fertilizes ovum continues to the uterus. When it reaches the uterus, it lodges in the uterus wall. Then it gradualy grows and changes until it becomes a baby.
