700 B.C. Greek Black-Figure PotteryTechnique By Nic Peterson
Location • Started in Corinth and later Athens. • Was also found in Laconia, Boeotia, eastern Greece and Italy.
Basic information • Used reddish orange clay • Large pieces were made in sections • Pottery shape- changed over time but was usually round with a top lip that curved out and some kind of handle • Painted Figures- very slim and lean (almost feline) with a small torsos and larger upper body.
Its makers • Black-figure painting on vases was the first art style to give rise to a significant number of identifiable artists. • Masters made it professionally and sold their pieces to make their living
How painted artwork was made • Figures and ornaments were painted on the body of the vessel using shapes and colors that looked like silhouettes. • Delicate contours were carved into the paint before firing, then details could be reinforced and highlighted with opaque colors, usually white and red.
Purpose • Used in daily life to store food and liquid • Richer people had more intricately designed pottery • Also used to tell a story with pictures • These pieces were usually decorational
