Cell Theory • All organisms are made of one or more cells. • The cell is the basic unit of all living things. • All cells come from existing cells.
Cell membrane & Cytoplasm Cell membrane- protective barrier that encloses a cell. Cytoplasm- fluid inside of cell
Nucleus Nucleus- Contains the cell’s DNA. Nucleolus- dark area inside the nucleus that begins to make ribosomes
Endoplasmic Reticulum Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)- system of folded membranes in which proteins, lipid and other materials are transported to other parts of the cell. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum- Close to nucleus has ribosomes on it Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum- lacks ribosomes
Ribosomes Ribosomes- organelle that makes proteins -smallest organelle
Mitochondria Mitochondria- The organelle in which sugar is broken down to produce energy. (ATP) “The mighty mitochondria”Powerhouse of the cell
Golgi Complex Golgi Complex-membrane that surrounds (packages) substances inside the cells so it can move around the cell.
Lysosomes Lysosomes- Organelle that digests food particles, waste, damaged cell parts, & foreign invaders
Vacuoles Vacuoles- Stores water and other liquids
Organelles found in plant cells Cell wall & Chloroplast Cell wall-rigid structure that supports the cell Chloroplast- organelle which uses the energy from the sun, water & CO2 to make sugar & O2
