Areas of Regular Polygons and Composite Figures Notes 12 – Section 11.4
Essential Learnings • Students will understand and be able to find areas of regular polygons and composite figures.
Vocabulary • Apothem – a segment drawn perpendicular to a side of a regular polygon. • The measure of each central angle of a regular n-gon is where n is the number of sides.
Parts of Regular Polygons Center Central angle Apothem
Example 1 In the figure, pentagon PQRST is inscribed in X. Identify the center, a radius, an apothem, and a central angle of the polygon. Then find the measure of a central angle.
Area of a Regular Polygon The area A of a regular n-gon with side length s is one half the product of the apothem a and perimeter P. a = apothem s = side length n = number of sides
Example 2 (11) Find the area of the regular pentagon. Round to the nearest tenth.
Example 3 (12) Find the area of the regular hexagon. Round to the nearest tenth.
Areas of Composite Figures • A composite figure is a figure that can be separated into regions that are basic shapes. • To find the area of a composite figure, find the area of each region and add or subtract the areas depending on the shape.
Example 4 (15) Find the area of the figure. Round to the nearest tenth if necessary.
Example 5 (20) Find the area of the figure. Round to the nearest tenth if necessary.
