  2. Going way back.. • It originated from a village called Chardonnay in Maconnais which lies in France's world-famous Burgundy region. • It is believed that Chardonnay wine was distributed throughout France by Cistercian monks. • The earliest known reference to Chardonnay wine was written by monks in the year 1330. • The Cistercian monks are believed to be the first group of people to plant the Chardonnay grape in their vineyards for the purpose of mass production and distribution of Chardonnay wine.

  3. Regions, Terroir Regions North America(more than 30 states) Canada France Chablis Burgundy Champagne South Africa Australia New Zealand Italy • Chardonnay can adapt to all vineyard soils • The most used are chalk, clay, and limestone • Grows in warm and cool temp. • Best place to grow is on the side of a hill for good drainage • Need an incredible amount of sun exposure and air circulation

  4. Characteristics Aromas & Flavors Types & styles Medium to High in acid Dry Full bodied Golden colors (sometimes green-tinged) Velvety feel in the mouth • Honey • Vanilla • Butter • Oak • Apples • Pears • Lemon • Melon • Grass • Mango • Straw • Mushroom • Cinnamon • cloves

  6. Other facts • Chardonnay is the dominant white grape of the great still wines of Burgundy • The Chardonnay Grape was first European variety to be produced commercially east of the Rocky Mountains. • Popular Wineries: Oregon's Willamette Valley, Santa Barbara, Sonoma's Russian River Valley, and the Carneros district of Napa Valley (due to chalk soil) • Often confused for Pinot Blanc because of relevance in leaves and vines. • Chardonnay is known for being oaked: • Aging in cheap oak casks • Aging in expensive French oaks • Soaking oak chips in the wine • Pouring liquid "essence of oak" in the wine • DNA profiling by Dr Carole Meredith from the University of California at Davis proves that Chardonnay is a cross of an old, nearly extinct variety called Gouais Blanc and a member of the Pinot family.
