  1. Obstacles to the Dance

  2. Look what God can do… or look what I can do ? • “Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?” • Galatians 3:3 • “I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. …When I want to do good, evil is right there with me” • Romans 7:18, 21

  3. When humans take over from the Spirit

  4. Influential individuals mould the church – • For better, or for worse • Intentional, or inadvertent • “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough” • 1 Corinthians 5:6

  5. The danger of depending on people • As we work in partnership with others we may start to rely simply on each other instead of relying on the Holy Spirit’s leadership • …out of respect for someone’s greater experience? • …out of laziness, failing to seek guidance ourselves?

  6. The danger of depending on programs • Comfortable familiarity with the program may lead to spiritual complacency and neglect of prayer • Adopting methods and models from other churches ‘because they work’

  7. The danger of spiritual pride • Pride… • Drives us to act as ‘the choreographer’ rather than be one of the ‘dancers’ • Generates concern for our own legacy or reputation rather than God’s activity • Feeds the fear of ‘nothing’ and lead to contrived, pseudo-spiritual occasions • Prevents us from releasing leadership to others who are anointed by the Spirit

  8. The danger of spiritual impatience • “The revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay” • Hab. 2:3 • Prayerful waiting is crucial • Pressing ahead of God’s timing may sabotage His plans

  9. When the devilcuts into the dance

  10. We face a real spiritual enemy • Subversion – more effective than assault ? • “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light” • 2 Cor. 11:14 • We need to be diligent • “…in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.” • 2 Cor. 2:11

  11. A deceptive generosity • Ananias & Sapphira(Acts 5:1-11) • Outwardly generous • Inwardly deceived and deceiving • What would the impact have been had Ananias become influential, rather than Barnabas?

  12. Dancing with the wrong partner • Recognize our own capacity for being led astray! • Listening to people who are not listening to the Spirit • Transparency and accountability allow co-workers to speak into our situation

  13. Staying on with our partner

  14. Forewarned is forearmed • Human sinfulness hinders our ability to stay in step with the Holy Spirit • Satan exploits human brokenness and sin in order to derail the purposes of God
