This presentation • Will discuss some alerting features • Will not discuss search techniques • Different for each database • ‘tricky’ or complex • For searching assistance: • Can arrange 1-on-1 training • Attend workshops coming soon. Look for announcements.
Alerts • Library Current Awareness page http://www.scripps.edu/library/currentawareness.html • Author/Subject alerts • Ovid (Medline, PsycINFO, etc) • PubMed (with TSRI holdings) • ISI Web of Science (Science Citation Index) • Faculty of 1000 • Table of Contents alerts • TDNet (table of contents alerts) • Individual publishers
PubMed (MyNCBI) • Register for free • Must Verify email • Save Searches • Set up as Alerts • Daily, Weekly, Monthly • Citations, Abstracts, links • Edit Email address – can take it with you! • To get TSRI holdings • Use PubMed link from Library database page • Or sign in and set “outside tool” to Scripps Research Institute
Register • Select username • Select password • Answer security Q NOTE: Library does not track or have access • Enter email • Can be done later, but must be verified before alerts will send
Verify Email • Respond to email sent by NCBI
TSRI holdings • To get TSRI holdings • Sign into MyNCBI • Click “MyNCBI” • Click “Outside Tool” on left
Save Searches /Alerts • Run your search while signed in • Click “Save Search”
Set up as Alert • The Save search window will open • You may save the search, or set up an alert • (select “yes” and additional options will appear) • Select frequency and format of alert
Take your alerts with you • Sign in to MyNCBI • Click on “MyNCBI” • Click User Preferences • Change email • Confirmation email will be sent, you must respond to verify account
OVID(Medline, PsycINFO, etc) • Set up a “Personal Account” for free • Save Searches • Set up Alerts • Weekly, biweekly, monthly • Choose fields to send in email • Can have links to TSRI full-text or ILLiad through SFX
Register • Create a username • Create a password NOTE: Library does not track or have access
ISI Web of Science • Register on entry page • Save Searches • Set up as Alerts • Weekly, monthly • Citation, abstract or full record • Citation Alerts • Notified when paper is cited within Science Citation Index
Faculty of 1000 • Register for free • Same as BioMedCentral login • Entire email address • Save Searches • Set up as Alert • Weekly, biweekly, monthly • Citation as HTML or plain text

TDNet • Register to receive Table of Contents alerts in email • Links to full-text articles in journals licensed by TSRI
Register • Click on “My TDNet” • Click “To create profile please click here”
Register • Enter your name and email • Create user name • Create password • Mark the box next to “By Journal Title” to receive Table of Content alerts • Click “Submit”
First time, click “Proceed” to select Journals Future visits will see journals in your alerts To add journals, click “Add Titles” Add Journals
Add Titles • Mark box next to journal • Click here to update before going to another page
Search • Search in My TDNet • Searches within YOUR selected journal titles • Search TDNet • Searches within the TDNet list • To add these titles will need to go to A-Z list
ToC from publishers • Use for titles not in TDNet • Register for free at publisher site • Select Titles to get ToC • Email example from Science Direct
Locate Full-Text • Click on link in database (or some alert emails) • Look for full-text link • Or search catalog for print • ILLiad – to request articles we do not have
SFX • Full text • Search for print • ILL through ILLiad
