Court Docket – Schedule of Court proceedings. • Prosecutor – The attorney representing the government. • Complaint – A prosecutor files charges directly with the court rather than seeking indictment through a Grand Jury. • Defendant – A person charged with committing a crime by state/federal government. • Plaintiff – In Civil trials, the person or persons who feel they have been wronged. • Subpoena – Legal documents ordering a particular person to appear in court to testify. • Summons - A legal document letting Civil defendants know that charges have been filed against them.
Preliminary Hearing – Held to determine if there is enough evidence to warrant a trial. • Indictment – A formal charge that someone has committed a felony crime. • Plea – Guilty, Not Guilty, or No Contest. • Plea Bargain - An agreement that the defendant will plead a certain way in exchange for a lesser punishment. • Bail – Money paid by a defendant in exchange for not having to stay in jail until his/her trial. • Public Defender – A court-appointed attorney. • Grand Jury - Special juries which hear evidence presented by a prosecutor to decide if a trial is warranted.
Capital Offense – A crime for which a defendant can be sentenced to death. • Sentence/Sentencing – Punishment for a crime. • Appeal - Defendants found guilty of a crime or who lose civil cases may ask a higher court to review their case. • Bailiff - Responsible for maintaining order, assisting the judge, looking after the jury and ensuring courtroom security. • Warrant – A document that gives law enforcement officials the ability to search a person’s house/property, or to arrest someone. • Verdict – Guilty or Not Guilty • Settlement – An out-of-court resolution to a civil case.
