The 5 Guiding Principles Presentation by Naman Bhatt
  2. Principle 1: Don’t Make Me Think! First law of usability Easy Navigation A Web page should be: Self-evident (Goals) Obvious (No thought) Self-explanatory (Eliminate user question marks)
  3. Principle 2: How we really use the web WE: Glance at each new page Scan some of the text We’re usually in a hurry Designers build more than they have to Click on first interest Not much penalty for guessing wrong Weighing options—improves chances? Guessing is more fun Look around quickly for anything that: Is of interest to us Is clickable At least a half-way decent matchfor a click! Click on ‘back’ button if not appealing
  4. Principle 3: Billboard Design 101 Create a clear visual hierarchy on each page The more important something is, the more prominent it is Logical content are related visually Things are “nested” visually to show what’s related Take advantage of conventions Minimal effort to navigate between pages Designers sometimes do not advantage of them. Break pages up into clearly defined areas People should be able to locate what they can do Make it obvious what’s clickable Distinguish links and search boxes Users should not have to think Minimize noise Decrease Busy-ness—Invitations, colors, or exclamation points Decrease Background noise—making menus appealing Assume that everything is visual noise until proven otherwise
  5. Principle 4: Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral Problems about decision-making relies on: the amount of thought required the amount of uncertainty “Three mindless, unambiguous clicks equal one click that requires thought.” Easier or mindless clicks are better
  6. Principle 5: Omit Needless Words Vigorous writing is concise. Sentence should contain no unnecessary words Paragraphs should have no unnecessary sentences. Realistic Goal—Removing half of the words Benefits: Reduces the noise level Increases efficiency of scanning Objective: Eliminate instructions and make everything self-explanatory, unless absolutely necessary. It makes the useful content more prominent It makes the page shorter with less scrolling
