What distorts the image of beauty? Nicole Johnson NJ
Today’s World • Women and their body parts sell everything from food to cars • Popular film and television actresses are becoming younger, taller and thinner • Women’s magazines are full of articles urging women that if they can just lose those last twenty pounds, they’ll have it all—the perfect marriage, loving children, and a rewarding career which is a false claim.
So what distorts the image of beauty? • Television • Movies • Magazines • The average American sees 3,000 ads per day! • Studies have shown that women's magazines had 10.5 times more advertisements pertaining to and praising weight loss pills, programs, and tips, than those advertisements found in men's magazines
Then VS. Now? • The average American woman is 5’4” and weighs 140 pounds. • The average American model is 5’11” and weighs 117 pounds.
How do Television, movies, and magazines distort beauty? • The media uses people who are very thin, attractive, and have muscular bodies • Detrimental to children who look up to these people • Even beautiful women are photoshoped, airbrushed, and could have had plastic surgery
Barbie’s proportions • Every little girl has owned at least one iconic Barbie that they see as a role model, look up to, & inspire to be like • Barbie would not be able to live in reality because her body proportions are not structured to hold herself up or have room for vital organs we need to survive
How should television, magazines, and movies be modified? • As adults and/or parents we need to inform children about how these types of media distort beauty • Television, Magazines, and Movies should include heavier women and men • If the media does not consider change we might as well looking like Barbie’s, covered head to toe in plastic from plastic surgery • Time to consider change before it is too late • Dove Commercial: Evolution of beauty http://youtu.be/knEIM16NuPg
