Who we are We are a concerned group of residents trying to make the suburb the premier suburb it should be. Why bncf? Bordeaux North consists of residential homes, businesses and other organisations that make a community. The forum exists to bring all these elements together. Primary objectives Safety – creating a safe and secure suburb for all who live, work, play and visit BN Clean – litter free, tidy, well maintained & good looking suburb Value – extracting the potential value that is intrinsic in the location of the suburb in relation to Sandton CBD
Successes • Getting City Parks to install play equipment in the park • Tidying up operations of the suburb by Pickitup • Weekly tidying up of suburb by gardener • Arranging trees and planting of gardens in the park and throughout the suburb • Maintaining gardens bi-monthly • Close interaction with David Potter – Ward 102 Councillor • Fire department repairing and maintaining hydrants throughout the suburb • Facilitating ADT security contract for Bordeaux Primary School • Representing the suburb on Sector1 Policing Forum and CPF • Close interaction with SAPS, Metro Police & other law enforcement agencies • Raising issues with the City to be dealt with and interacting with various City departments to find solutions, including; • Noise issues from clubs • Street mechanics and illegal businesses • Speeding, rat running & traffic calming measures • Improper and illegal use of the park by burial societies and stokvels • Derelict and run down properties and illegal/improper use of properties • Illegal taxi ranking • Objecting to improper building applications & plans • Facilitating pro-active foot patrols by ADT guards • Investigating best security options within suburb limitations • Interaction and building relationships with other local residents associations
Security Initiative • There has been an increase in violent and forceful crime recently that was not an issue in BN for many years • Proactive security is wanted and required as evidenced by the enquiries when the guarding patrols ceased and the increased crime • May residents of the suburb were and are not prepared to pay extra for proactive patrolling • Other alternatives were investigated and CSS Tactical were allowed to canvass for business. Not enough interest was generated to allow their model to work • ADT has between 55% & 60% of the 300 homes as clients • For a nominal fee, ADT are prepared to guarantee a vehicle patrolling the suburb for 60% of allowable hours. Other time will be responding to calls. • ADT vehicles can be available in the suburb in the other time and as additional response vehicles • Only by getting the community involved can crime levels be reduced, working with SAPS, JMPD & security provider
History • ADT deployed 2x 24hr guards to patrol Bordeaux North in July 2011 to reduce crime • Cost of R40,000 per month at no charge to the residents • In April/May 2012, telesales and door knocking was conducted to sign contributions for guards to remain • Existing ADT armed response clients – additional R150 • Non ADT armed response clients – R250 • Needed 200 contributions for the guard from ~315 houses • Signed 8 Armed Response clients and 12 contributions for guard • 60% of residents were not willing to pay R150 on top of R450 armed response fee • Guards were removed
